
Wolverines Fall to No. 12 Wake Forest on Late Penalty Stroke

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to No. 12 Wake Forest on a fourth-quarter penalty stroke in its second game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Sunday morning (Aug. 27) at North Carolina's Karen Shelton Stadium.
The stroke, which was called amid confusion with a Michigan player down on the midfield turf, broke the scoreless tie at the 49:57 mark. Ava Moore converted the opportunity for the Demon Deacons.
The Wolverines continued to pressure after the goal, drawing four corners and posting four shots over the final 10 minutes, but could not break through.
Wake Forest outshot the Wolverines 17-12, while Michigan posted an 8-4 edge in penalty corners. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon earned eight saves, including five in the third quarter, while Wake goalkeeper Ellie Todd stopped all six U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (0-2) will kick off a four-game homestand at Phyllis Ocker Field with games against UC Davis on Friday (Sept. 1) at 6 p.m. and Old Dominion next Sunday (Sept. 3) at noon. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
