
Wolverines Advance to Big Ten Tournament Semifinals With Win Over Ohio State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team defeated Ohio State 14-10 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Saturday (April 29) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. With four points on the day, sophomore Ryan Cohen became the ninth player in program history to reach 100-points in a career.
The victory over the Buckeyes advances the Wolverines to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals for the second time in program history. U-M will take on top seed Penn State on Thursday (May 4) at 1 p.m. at John Hopkins' Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md.
Michigan (7-6, 3-3 Big Ten) got on the board first, as senior Josh Zawada scored the opening goal at the 14-minute mark of the first quarter. Following a quick Ohio State goal, Michigan regained the lead 2-1 with a goal from graduate student Bryce Clay at the 10:38 mark of the first quarter.
Ohio State (5-9, 1-5 Big Ten) responded with two more goals to take a 3-2 lead at the 8:05 mark. U-M four straight goals to re-take the lead at 6-3. Junior Isaac Aronson scored at the 5:24 mark followed by a goal from senior Jacob Jackson at the 4:11 mark. At the 2:03 mark, Cohen provided an assist on junior Michael Boehm's goal, making him the ninth Wolverine to reach 100 career points. Michigan closed the opening period with a 6-3 lead following a goal from graduate Peter Thompson with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.
The second quarter began with another goal from Clay at the 13:43 mark. Cohen scored at the 9:11 mark to increase Michigan's lead to 8-3. U-M closed the half with three goals in the final four minutes, going into halftime with an 11-6 lead. Thompson scored his second goal of the game at the 3:39 mark before Jackson added his second at the 2:48 mark. At the 2:11 mark of the second quarter, Boehm also recorded his second goal of the game.
Following a high-scoring first half, Michigan and Ohio State combined for only two goals in the third quarter. Michigan's goal came from Zawada at 14:09, and Ohio State's Mitchell Pelke scored at the 7:49 mark.
In the fourth quarter, Michigan took advantage of an extra-man opportunity with a goal from Cohen at the 11:32 mark. U-M's lead increased to 14-8 after Cohen added his third goal of the game at the 8:18 mark of the fourth quarter. Ohio State responded with back-to-back goals from Matt Caputo at 5:16 and Matthew Fritz at the 5:09 mark of the final quarter, bringing the score to 14-10.
Clay also recorded a four-point game with two goals and two assists, while Boehm, Zawada, Thompson, and Jackson all scored a pair of goals. Junior faceoff man Justin Wietfeldt won nine of 13 faceoffs with five ground balls, and junior goaltender Shane Carr made 14 saves en route to reaching double digits for the second time on the year.
