ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Senior Josh Zawada and juniors Michael Boehm and Justin Wietfeldt of the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team were named to the All-Big Ten first team, the conference announced Wednesday (April 26).
The first-team honor is the second in Zawada's career and his third All-Big Ten accolade after taking first-team honors last season and second-team recognition in 2021. Consistently drawing the opposing team's top defender, Zawada is third in the league in points per game (3.83), as well as sixth in goals per game (2.08) and fourth in assists (1.75). He is tied with Boehm for third in points per game in Big Ten play (4.20), paced by being second in the league in assists per game (2.00). Already the U-M all-time leader in points (194), goals (108) and assists (86), he is six points away from becoming the first Wolverine to reach the 200-point plateau in a career.
Boehm, the reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week (April 25), is coming off his single-game record eight-goal performance in U-M's 19-14 win over Ohio State. He leads the Big Ten in goals per game (2.67) and points per game (4.42) and is second in the conference and sixth nationally in shooting percentage (50 percent) while boasting a team-best six hat tricks on the season. His 16 goals against Big Ten opponents is tied for most in the league, while his 4.20 points per game is tied for third in the conference.
Wietfeldt tops the Big Ten and ranks second in the country and with a .652 faceoff win percentage (103-of-158). He also is third in the league in ground balls per game (6.17). Against Big Ten opponents, he has won 52-of-73 draws (71 percent).
The honors mark the first time in program history U-M has had multiple first-team selections in one season. The trio also doubles U-M's first-team honorees, as Zawada (2022), Nick Rowlett (2021), and Brent Noseworthy (2018) already in the prestigious club.
Graduate senior Bryce Clay was named the teams sportsmanship honoree for his leadership and community work. After missing the 2022 season due to injury, he has returned to the U-M lineup with a re-imagined role with time being split between midfield and attack. He has 12 goals and four assists on the year for 16 points, and 93 points (77G, 16A) in his U-M career.
