CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fought within one goal on seven occasions but ultimately fell 17-13 to No. 1-ranked Virginia on Saturday (Feb. 11) at Klockner Stadium.
Junior Michael Boehm became the seventh player in U-M history to eclipse the 100-point plateau with his goal at the 14-minute mark of the second quarter. His 55 goals and 45 assists make him the second-fastest Wolverine to eclipse the plateau, doing so in 28 career games.
Virginia (1-0) took an early two-goal lead before U-M junior Grant McCurry put Michigan (0-1) on the board at 11:06 of the first to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Following goals from graduate student Peter Thompson and junior Justin Wietfeldt to bring the Wolverines within one at 3-2 and 4-3, respectively, the Cavaliers scored two straight to make the tally 6-3 with 3:56 to play in the opening stanza. U-M sophomore Ryan Cohen made it 6-4, and junior Michael Boehm brought U-M within 6-5 in the opening minute of the second quarter.
The two sides traded goals, featuring a Wolverine marker from sophomore Aidan Mulholland at 10:57, while senior Jake Bonomi scored off a feed from senior Josh Zawada at 4:49 as the matchup went to the half with Virginia holding a 9-7 lead.
In the third quarter, U-M made it to a one-goal game on a goal from senior longpole Ryan Schriber at 4:39 off a feed from classmate Michael Cosgrove to make it 11-10. Schriber struck again from just inside the restraining line nearly four minutes later as he canned a pass from Zawada with 21 seconds to go in the third period, and the game went to the fourth with Michigan trailing 13-12.

Michigan began the fourth quarter man-up and earned another extra-man chance on the same possession, but were unable to convert on either chance. UVA's Thomas McConvey increased their lead to 14-12 at the 11:52 mark, and Payton Cormier scored back-to-back goals at 5:41 and 3:38 to put the game out of reach at 16-12. Zawada went on to notch his second of the day with 2:58 for the final Wolverine marker of the contest. McConvey cemented the final score of 17-13 with 1:13 remaining.
Graduate student Bryce Clay returned to the lineup after missing the 2022 season due to injury and registered one shot.
The Wolverine defense played without the services of graduate student captain Andrew Darby. Junior Wilson Sneath and sophomore Kees Van Wees made their first Wolverine starts on close defense, while Thompson and freshmen Carson Billig, Bo Lockwood and Jimmy Pisani made their Wolverine debuts on the afternoon.
Michigan will open up the home portion of its 2023 slate next Saturday (Feb. 18), as Hofstra visits Ann Arbor. Opening faceoff at U-M Lacrosse Stadium is slated for noon.
