
Wolverines Narrowly Fall to No. 10 Maryland in Return Home

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team, despite significant advantages in both shots and penalty corners, narrowly fell to No. 10 Maryland, 1-0, on Friday night (Oct 13) in its return home to Phyllis Ocker Field.
The Terrapins scored the game's only goal midway through the first quarter, at 7:46, on their first penalty corner of the contest; Sammy Popper converted on the direct shot from the top of the arc.
Michigan dominated large swathes of the game, outshooting the Terrapins, 20-8, and outcornering them, 9-2. The Wolverines allowed just two shots and no penalty corners in the second half.
The Wolverines had great chances early and late in the third quarter, in particular, drawing four total corners in the frame. Senior Anouk Veen led Michigan with six shots, including four in the third.
Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon posted three saves -- all in the first half, including back-to-back stops on a flurry in front midway through the second quarter -- while Maryland's Alyssa Klebasko stopped all eight U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (6-7, 1-5 Big Ten) will wrap the home weekend with a 1 p.m. slate against Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 15) at Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
