Maddie Burns, Erin Garvey, Jill Smith (May 10)
USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America -- Graduate student Erin Garvey, junior Maddie Burns and sophomore Jill Smith were named USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America honorable mention honors.
Starting every game on defense, Burns leads the team with 22 caused turnovers and 32 ground balls, while also winning 44 draw controls to rank second for the Wolverines. She was been named first team All-Big Ten and was a midseason All-America honorable mention selection.
Garvey has appeared in 16 games for the Wolverines with 15 starts in the midfield, ranking third in points with 27 on the season. She has scored 26 goals with 10 multi-goal performances and has 26 draw-control wins.
Smith has been impressive all season on the attack with a team-best 70 points (59 goals, 11 assists), while ranking third with 44 draw-control wins. The Farmington Hills, Mich., native has produced 14 multi-goal games with 13 of them hat tricks. Smith became just the fourth Michigan player to be named a Tewaaraton Nominee and was a first team All-Big Ten selection.
Jill Smith (April 20)
Tewaaraton Award nominee -- Sophomore Jill Smith was named a Tewaaraton Nominee as she leads the Wolverines with a single-season program record 60 points. She broke the U-M single-season goals record with her 52 on the season, tying her for sixth nationally, and adds eight assists to her tally. She also ranks third on the team with 38 draw-control wins and has a .804 shots-on-goal percentage. Smith has recorded 11 hat tricks in 15 appearances this season and scored a career-best six goals against then-No. 7 Florida on Feb. 12. Maddie Burns, Maya Santa-Maria, Jill Smith (March 31)
IL Midseason All-America -- Juniors Maya Santa-Maria and Maddie Burns and sophomore Jill Smith were all named IL Midseason All-Americans. Smith was named to the second team and Santa-Maria and Burns were named honorable mention. Smith has started 12 games on the attack and broke the U-M single-season scoring record with her 45 goals in the 2023 season. The sophomore attacker ranks second nationally with her 45 goals and ranks second for Michigan with her 34 draw-control wins. Burns leads the Wolverine defensive unit matching up with the toughest offensive player on all opposing teams. She leads Michigan with 24 ground balls, has 18 caused turnovers and ranks third with 31 draw control wins. Santa-Maria has started all 13 games in the cage this season and boasts a .509 save percentage to lead the Big Ten. The junior goalie has 83 saves on the season, including a career-best 13 saves against Colorado and made 10 saves against then-No. 7 Florida.
Jill Smith (March 9)
Tewaaraton Award Watch List -- Sophomore Jill Smith has been added to the 2023 Tewaaraton Award Watch List. She is one of two Wolverines on the 2023 list, joining Maddie Burns, and is one of seven Michigan players in program history to be named to the prestigious award's watch list. Smith has started six games this season and has scored a team-best 28 goals, with at least three goals in every appearance. The attacker ranks third nationally in goals scored and is second in the Big Ten with 4.67 goals per game. Jill Smith, Maya Santa-Maria (March 7)
Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week -- Sophomore Jill Smith was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after she tallied nine goals in two road games to bring her season total to 28. She netted five of Michigan's 12 goals against Colorado and four of five against No. 9 Denver. She also added two assists against Colorado and had three draw-control wins on the weekend. Smith ranks third nationally with her 28 goals and ranks second in the Big Ten with 4.67 goals per game. Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week -- Junior Maya Santa-Maria earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors after she made 21 saves in two games. Santa-Maria notched a career-best 13 saves against Colorado after she stopped eight shots against the high-powered Denver offense. The junior goalie leads the Big Ten with a .514 save percentage. Maddie Burns (Feb. 28)
Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week -- Junior Maddie Burns earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors after she held down the U-M defense against Central Michigan on Sunday (Feb. 26). Burns led Michigan with four caused turnovers and four ground balls while winning two draw controls against the Chippewas. The nod is the first for Burns. » Big Ten Release
Jill Smith, Julia Schwabe (Feb. 14)
Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week -- Sophomore Jill Smith earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors after she paced the conference with 11 goals in the season's opening weekend. She netted five goals against No. 19 Jacksonville before topping her career-best with six goals against No. 7 Florida. The Farmington Hills, Mich., native added seven draw-control wins, four caused turnovers and four ground balls in the two-game weekend. Big Ten Midfielder of the Week -- Sophomore Julia Schwabe was named Big Ten Midfielder of the Week after totaling six points (three goals, three assists) in Michigan's opening weekend. Schwabe scored a pair of goals and assisted on one against No. 7 Florida, while also causing two turnovers and adding one draw-control win over the weekend. Tewaaraton Watch List -- Junior defender Maddie Burns was named to the 2023 Tewaaraton Watch List. Burns is one of six Wolverines to get named to the Watch List and the first since Arielle Weissman in the 2022 campaign. The junior defender started all 18 games in the 2022 season, was a USA Lacrosse Magazine honorable mention All-America honoree and was also named IWLCA West/Midwest All-Region second team. The Philadelphia, Pa., native helped anchor the U-M defense, which ranked as high as third nationally for scoring defense. Kayley Thompson, Morgan Whitaker, Maddie Burns
Big Ten Players to Watch -- Graduate students Kaley Thompson and Morgan Whitaker along with junior Maddie Burns have been named Big Ten Players to Watch for the 2023 season. The honor marks the second for Burns and the first for Thompson and Whitaker.
A defender, Burns started all 18 games in 2022 and was a USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America honorable mention and was also named IWLCA West/Midwest All-Region second team. The Philadelphia, Pa., native helped anchor the U-M defense, which ranked as high as third nationally for scoring defense. Burns ranked second on the team with 18 caused turnovers and third with 26 ground balls en route to earning first team All-Big Ten honors.
Thompson returns for her fifth year after appearing in all 18 games with 17 starts in the midfield last season. The Bel Air, Md., native was named second team All-Big Ten after ranking third for the Wolverines with 33 points (32 goals, one assist).
Whitaker, a 2023 team captain, helped pace the Michigan defense in the 2022 season, which ranked as high as third nationally for scoring defense. She was named a USA Lacrosse Magazine 2023 Honorable Mention Preseason All-America and was a second team All-Big Ten selection in 2022. The Glen Allen, Va., native appeared in and started all 18 games for the Wolverines in 2022 while leading Michigan with 19 caused turnovers and adding 33 ground balls, which ranked second. » Big Ten Release
Big Ten Preseason Poll -- The conference coaches picked U-M to finish fourth in the standings behind Maryland, Northwestern and Rutgers. Last season, the Wolverines made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. » Big Ten Release
