ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team placed four players on the All-Big Ten Conference teams, the league announced Wednesday (Nov. 2) on the eve of the 2022 Big Ten Tournament. Fifth-year senior Katie Anderson was named to the All-Big Ten first team, while senior Nina Apoola and fifth years Kathryn Peterson and Anna Spieker received second-team recognition.
Anderson earned All-Big Ten honors for the first team after previously twice garnering NFHCA All-West Region second-team recognition. U-M's field general, who has started every game in the midfield over the last three seasons, owns two goals and two assists on the season and has been a vital piece of the Wolverines' attack corner.
Apoola garnered All-Big Ten recognition for the first time in her career. A midfielder and a key component of U-M's attack and defensive corner units, Apoola owns two goals and six assists. She also was named the Wolverines Sportsmanship Award recipient, given annually to student-athletes who distinguish themselves through good sportsmanship and ethical behavior, as well as demonstrate academic excellence and good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Peterson, a four-time All-Big Ten second-team selection and two-time NFHCA third team All-American, owns two goals and two assists this season -- with 20 career goals and 24 assists -- primarily as an inserter on Michigan's attack corner. She has been a major contributor to the Wolverines' midfield over the last five seasons.
Spieker also is a repeat All-Big Ten performer, adding second-team selection in both 2019 and 2020-21. She leads the nation with a 0.75 goals-against average and 16th with a .769 save percentage. She owns three complete-game shutouts and has contributed to four more this season; Michigan owns four shutouts over the last six games. Spieker was a NFHCA second team All-American in spring 2021.
Michigan will kick off the postseason at the Big Ten Tournament this week at Buckeye Turf Field in Columbus, Ohio. The fourth-seeded Wolverines will open play against Iowa in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 3).
