BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- University of Michigan graduate student Clare Brush and senior Kayla Reed were named to the 2020 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Senior Team, the organization announced on Wednesday (May 19). The duo was listed among 38 total selections, while Michigan was one of just seven programs with multiple participants.
The in-person 2020 NFHCA Senior Game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the 2021 Virtual Coaches Caucus, the NFHCA Division I membership agreed to continue to recognize a selected group from the graduating class of 2021 who either played or would have played their senior season during the 2020-2021 academic year. All 10 Division I conferences and five NCAA regions that sponsor field hockey are represented on the list of 2020 honorees.
Brush, a two-year Michigan captain, started all 18 games in the Wolverine backfield this year and posted a pair of assists. She contributed to U-M's heralded defensive unit that ranked third nationally with a 0.61 goals-against average, boasted 10 shutouts and held opponents to just 7.9 shots and 3.8 penalty corners per game. Brush appeared in 64 games over her five seasons at Michigan, with 34 starts, and recorded three career assists.
Reed was a four-year starter at midfield, appearing in 80 career games with starts in all but one. She tallied 17 career goals, including three this season, eight assists and 42 points. She tallied three game-winning goals over her collegiate tenure, including the overtime game-winner against Ohio State in clinch U-M's 2018 Big Ten title.
Over Brush and Reed's career, the Wolverines captured three Big Ten championships, two tournament crowns and twice appeared in the NCAA Final Four, including this season's runner-up finish.
