ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the Big Ten Outdoor Championships just over two weeks away, the University of Michigan men's track and field team is splitting up between meets at Ohio State and Indiana on Friday and Saturday (April 30-May 1) for one final big regular-season push.
The Wolverines' sprinters, jumpers and throwers will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the B1G Jesse Owens Classic, while the Michigan distance crew is returning to Bloomington, Ind., for the fourth time this spring for the B1G Billy Hayes Invitational. Both meets span Friday and Saturday, with a bulk of the action at Ohio State taking place during the afternoon hours and much of Michigan's program at Indiana set for the evening hours.
Both meets will serve the purpose of a final dress rehearsal for the conference meet, which will be held May 12-14 at Illinois. The Wolverines will host the B1G Len Paddock Open next Saturday (May 8), but many of the team's top contenders will be idle in preparation for Big Tens.
Entries are not yet finalized, but all of those top contenders are expected to compete at one of the meets this weekend. The Ohio State contingent will include All-Americans Ayden Owens, Andrew Liskowitz and John Meyer, as well as 2021 standouts Heath Baldwin, Mason Mahacek, Roland Amarteifio, Dubem Amene and Josh Zeller.
A limited Friday (April 30) schedule for the Wolverines will begin around 3 p.m. and last through approximately 6:30 p.m., with the majority of the team's entries to compete Saturday (May 1) beginning at 11 a.m. The final event of Saturday in Columbus is expected to wrap around 4:30 p.m.
All-Americans Jack Aho, Tom Brady, Tom Dodd and Devin Meyrer are likely to compete for the Wolverines at Indiana, alongside 2021 standouts Anthony Berry, Nick Foster, Christian Hubaker, Joost Plaetinck, Oli Raimond and Derrick Simmons.
Michigan will open its weekend in Bloomington with the steeplechase and 5,000 meters at 7:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively, with Saturday entries in the 800 meters (7:10 p.m.), 1,500 meters (8:10 p.m.) and 4x400 relay (9:15 p.m.).
The competitions also will provide one more opportunity to notch marks and times that will better position the Wolverines to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminaries next month by virtue of ranking among the top 32 in the East Region. The East Prelims are the opening rounds for the NCAA Outdoor Championships to be held in Eugene, Ore., in June.
Once entries are finalized, this posting will be updated with more details and a full schedule of when to watch the Wolverines.
Fans can follow along with the action by way of live results from FinishTiming for the Jesse Owens Classic and via live results from Indiana for its meet. Updates will also be provided via the team's official social media accounts for both competitions.
Wolverines Notes
• With the Big Ten Outdoor Championships fast approaching, the Wolverines have shown so far in 2021 that they will bring a balanced approach to the conference meet. In the 21 events contested at the meet, Michigan has competitors ranked top-10 in 13 of them. Michigan looks particularly deep in the steeplechase with five of the top nine in the conference, while it has three of the top 10 in both the 10,000 meters and the decathlon.
• Joost Plaetinck (8:52.68) and Christian Hubaker (8:54.53) lead the second-deepest steeplechase corps in the country, per the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Event Squad Rankings. They are looking to become the first pair of Michigan teammates to crack 8:50 in the same competition.
• Only slightly behind the steeplechase group in the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings is the 110-meter hurdles crew, which ranks fourth nationally. Josh Zeller will look to build on his breakthrough 13.72-second (+2.2m/s wind) effort two weeks ago, with Ayden Owens, Job Mayhue and Roland Amarteifio all looking to join him in sub-14.00 territory.
• In terms of shot put duos, very few schools in the country have it better than Michigan with five-time All-American Andrew Liskowitz and All-American John Meyer. They are ranked Nos. 3 and 4 in the conference this spring, respectively, and Nos. 14 and 23, respectively. Only Southern California and North Dakota State join Michigan with multiple top-25 shot putters.
