BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In a showdown of the Big Ten's five fastest men in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the 2021 outdoor season to date, the trio of Christian Hubaker, Joost Plaetinck and Austin Remick turned in one of the finest group efforts in school history for the event.
Hubaker was the narrow runner-up in a career-best 8:44.84, while fourth-place Plaetinck in 8:49.35 and fifth-place Remick in 8:54.31 ran career-best times.
It marked the first time in school history that three men had dipped below nine minutes in the same steeplechase race, and it was just the second time that U-M teammates had run sub-8:50 at the same meet. Only Mason Ferlic and Connor Mora had previously achieved the feat at the 2015 NCAA East Prelims.
With their performances, all three have virtually assured themselves of trips to the 2021 edition of the East Prelims. As of Thursday, the NCAA announced that the field of qualifiers would be expanded from 32 athletes per individual event to 48. A top-48 spot over the past three years has been 9:03.66, on average.
In the only other race of the day, Tom Brady likely secured his East Prelims spot for the 5,000-meter event with a runner-up 13:50.36. It was fast enough to earn him the No. 8 spot in school history.
Teammate James Gedris put himself on the very edge of the East Prelims qualifying bubble with a fifth-place 14:13.29.
Action at Indiana resumes Saturday (May 1) at 7:05 p.m. for the Michigan men.
