Liskowitz Reasserts Himself as NCAA Title Contender on Final Day of OSU Invite

On the final day of a split-squad weekend between Ohio State and Indiana on Saturday (May 1), the University of Michigan men's track and field team was led at Ohio State by the re-emergence of Andrew Liskowitz as an NCAA title contender and at Indiana by tremendous mid-distance depth.
Michigan concludes its regular season with its lone home meet of the outdoor season on Saturday (May 8) before heading to Illinois for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on May 12-14.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- University of Michigan graduate student Andrew Liskowitz reminded the collegiate shot put scene that he is still a force to be reckoned with as he launched one of the nation's best marks on Saturday (May 1) to headline the Wolverines' final day of competition at the Jesse Owens Classic.
Liskowitz had just one legal throw, but he made it count with a 20.70m (67 feet, 11 inch) heave in the third round to both stave off elimination and secure his spot as the top collegian in the invitational section of the competition behind Olympic medalist and world champion Joe Kovacs.
Though the mark measured shy of his school-record 21.15m (69-4.75) from the summer of 2019, it was the best throw ever launched by a Wolverine during the collegiate season (through the NCAA Outdoor Championships). Nationally, it propelled him all the way to No. 2 on the NCAA Division I descending order list for the 2021 outdoor season, reaffirming his status as an NCAA title contender.
Teammate John Meyer also had a career-best-type day, throwing a trio of 19-meter-plus marks, headlined by an outdoor-best 19.19m (62-11.5) for third place.
Sprinter Dubem Amene continued his breakthrough outdoor campaign with another career-best performance at 400 meters, this time in 46.40 seconds to take third in a showdown of three of the four fastest men in the conference.
He climbed a spot to No. 6 in outdoor school history for the distance, and surpassed the indoor school record of 46.42 set by multiple-time All-American hurdler Taylor McLaughlin during his freshman campaign in 2016.
Only five NCAA Division I freshmen have run faster over 400 meters this spring.
Amene doubled back to close out the day as the anchor leg of the third-place 4x400 relay team, combining with Roland Amarteifio, Ayden Owens and Austin Lin to clock a season's best 3:09.56.
Individually, Owens excelled in the 110-meter hurdles along with event winner Josh Zeller. Zeller led the way in the prelims at 13.81 seconds with Owens not far behind at 13.88 -- both wind-aided with a +2.9m/s tailwind -- before Zeller took the win in the final at 13.73 (+3.2m/s). Owens moved to No. 8 in school history, while Zeller was just .01 off his overall best.
Headlining the action in the jumps was the duo of Heath Baldwin and Max Wagner, who tied for second in the high jump at 2.05m (6-8.75).

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan mid-distance crew turned in a slate of impressive performances on the final day of the B1G Billy Hayes Invitational at the 800-meter and 1,500-meter distances on Saturday (May 1).
Led by third-place Oli Raimond in a career-best 3:44.52, three Wolverines placed inside the top-nine at 1,500 meters and five recorded personal-best efforts. The first-year Australian collegian was joined in the top 10 by seventh-place Tom Dodd in 3:45.36 and ninth-place Thomas Shilgalis in a career-best 3:46.08.
Earlier in the evening, the team's fastest 1,500-meter runner of 2021 -- Nick Foster -- dropped down to 800 meters and posted a team-leader in that event, going 1:49.29 for fifth. In the next section, Derrick Simmons clocked 1:49.50 to finish sixth overall.
The pair were the 19th and 20th men in school history to crack 1:50 for the 800 meter distance outdoors.
