ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Headlined by what is now the nation's best outdoor shot put duo in John Meyer and Andrew Liskowitz, the University of Michigan men's track and field team closed out its 2021 regular season Saturday (May 8) at home with the B1G Len Paddock Open.
Meyer and Liskowitz turned in the finest showing by a pair of shot put teammates in school history -- indoors or out -- in a 1-2 finish that saw both men exceed 20 meters, and the Wolverines also got strong performances from Job Mayhue, Roland Amarteifio, Dubem Amene, Anthony Berry and others.
Meyer firmly established himself as one of the NCAA's best shot putters with a career-best and winning 20.48m (67 feet, 2.25 inch) heave that puts him at No. 2 in school history behind only teammate Liskowitz.
Liskowitz was second on this day at 20.37m (66-10), though he fouled throws that went even further.
Meyer's mark, paired with Liskowitz's season best of 20.70m (67-11) put the two at No. 3 and No. 4 in the country. No other school has two men who have thrown farther than 20 meters this spring.
Chief among the impressive performances on the track was a quick 13.84-second (+1.4m/s) clocking in the 110-meter hurdles for Mayhue, which elevated him to a share of sixth in school history in the event. He is now the third Wolverine to dip under 13.90 this year, joining Josh Zeller (13.72) and Ayden Owens (13.88) to bolster one of the nation's deepest hurdle crews.
Michigan also got a win and a season-best time in the 400-meter hurdles in 52.28 seconds.
The day also featured strong efforts by individuals who were stepping down in distance from their typical events to sharpen their speed ahead of the postseason.
After reeling off a streak of impressive 400-meter results the last few weeks, Amene dropped down to 200 meters to win in a career-best 21.25 seconds (+0.1m/s) -- an improvement of nearly a half-second over previous results at the distance this spring.
At the 800-meter distance, Berry became the third Wolverine to crack 1:50 this year by the slimmest of margins, clocking 1:49.99 for a new career best.
Michigan also got wins from Joe Meyers (steeplechase), Cassidy Henshaw (high jump) and Heath Baldwin (discus).
The Wolverines now turn their attention fully toward the postseason, beginning this coming Friday through Sunday (May 14-16) with the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Champaign, Ill.
