ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team (3-1-3-2, 3-1-2 Big Ten) hits the road for a pair of contests starting Thursday (March 18) with a 3 p.m. contest at Maryland (0-4-2, 0-4-2 Big Ten) on Big Ten Network Plus. The Wolverines will finish their road trip in State College, Pa., for a Sunday matchup against Penn State (4-1-1, 4-1-1 Big Ten) at noon on Big Ten Network.
Wolverine Bites
• After not scoring many goals in its first four games, the Wolverines have scored 10 in their last two outings. U-M won a 3-2 double-overtime thriller against Nebraska (March 7) as Danielle Wolfe scored the game-winner in the closing minutes to take home a road victory. Michigan followed it up with a 7-3 win over in-state rival Michigan State (March 12) with goals coming from five different players.
• Michigan scored seven goals for the first time since 2015 (8-1 win over Eastern Michigan) in its 7-3 victory over Michigan State last week. It the second time in the Michigan tenure of coach Jennifer Klein that Michigan has scored six goals or more (6-1 vs. Central Michigan in 2018).
• Senior Nicki Hernandez and junior Meredith Haakenson each had five points for the Wolverines, scoring twice and adding an assist, while freshmen Kacey Lawrence and Sammi Woods each scored their second collegiate goals against the Spartans. Junior defender Sydney Shepherd scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick from Raleigh Loughman.
• With its recent offensive spurt, Michigan is averaging 2.17 goals per game and has taken 95 shots compared to its opponents 61. The Wolverines have spread the wealth with six players scoring and 10 adding at least one point in the first six games of the season. U-M has scored 13 goals, nine of which have been assisted and put 44 shots on net for a .463 shots-on-goal percentage.
• The Wolverine freshmen have made an early impact in the 2020-21 season. Sammi Woods has six points, scoring two goals and adding assists in back-to-back outings. Kacey Lawrence scored in back-to-back games at Nebraska and at home against Michigan State, while Sarah Bridenstine had an assist on U-M's second goal against Minnesota. Woods and Bridenstine have each made one start, while Emilee Ray also has seen playing time in one match.

Maryland
Michigan leads, 6-0, in the all-time series with Maryland
The Wolverines have not lost a game to the Terrapins in six meetings in the all-time series. Michigan earned two wins against Maryland in 2019, concluding its regular season with a 4-1 win before playing the Terrapins the following week in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament and notching a 3-0 shutout victory at U-M Soccer Stadium. This season, Maryland is still looking for its first victory as it comes into Thursday's match with a 0-4-2 overall record, including ties with Michigan State and Rutgers. The Terrapins have been outscored, 11-6, this season by opponents and average 9.0 shots per game. Maryland is led by Keyera Wyann, who has two goals, while Kennedy Tolson has started all five games in net with 12 saves and a .632 save percentage.
Penn State
Penn State leads, 24-5-7, in the all-time series with Penn State
Michigan has struggled with the Nittany Lions in the past, but the Wolverines have found some success recently, winning the 2019 regular-season meeting, 1-0, in State College. The Wolverines also played Penn State in the 2019 Big Ten Tournament finale, falling, 2-1, in overtime. The Nittany Lions are 4-1-1 overall this season and are coming off a 2-2 double-overtime draw with Ohio State. Transfer Sam Coffey leads a Penn State offense that is outscoring opponents, 15-8, with four goals and three assists, while Ally Schlegal has three goals and three assists. In net, Katherine Asman has taken over the stating role, making 22 saves and carrying a .759 save percentage into the weekend.
