COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sophomore Sammi Woods scored her fourth goal of the season, but the 22nd-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team fell 2-1 against Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 17) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
A late penalty for the Buckeyes in the 85th minute proved to be the difference. A marker from Woods in the 52nd minute proved to be the lone goal for the Wolverines.
Ohio State (8-7-1, 3-4-1 Big Ten) had the first big chance of the match in the 12th minute, as Brittany Duncan took a shot through traffic that was parried out by Wolverine goalkeeper Hillary Beall to hold the contest scoreless. Through 20 minutes, OSU held a 6-3 lead in the shots category.
Michigan junior Lily Farkas checked into the match in the 27th minute and immediately made an impact. In the 30th minute, she tried her luck from 25 yards out, sending in a shot that dipped at the top of the six and tested the Buckeyes goalkeeper, but it went out for a U-M corner. Minutes later, she took a lofted service from classmate Hannah Blake inside the box, but her effort was pushed narrowly right.
The Wolverines controlled the final 20 minutes of the half and ended the opening 45 minutes with a 9-8 lead in shots.
U-M broke through in the 52nd minute, as a shot from Kacey Lawrence went out for a corner. The ensuing ball from senior Raleigh Loughman went in to classmate Nicki Hernandez on the near touchline. A back pass to Woods at the top of the six was put home with a left foot top shelf to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

The Buckeyes pulled level in the 66th minute, as a shot inside the box by Kailyn Dudukovich was stopped by Beall point-blank. However, the rebound skipped to Chloe Delyser on the back post, who finished lower-right to tie the match at 1.
Michigan continued to control the flow of play in the latter portion of the match, with changes from senior Sydney Shepherd (72nd minute), and Blake (78th minute). A stroke of bad fortune hit the Wolverines in the 85th minute, as a penalty kick was awarded to the Buckeyes under protest from the Wolverine bench.
Beall guessed correctly on the attempt diving to her left, but the shot from Dudukovich found the back of the net to give OSU a 2-1 lead with just minutes to play.
Following the Buckeyes goal, U-M had two set-piece opportunities, as well as a trio of shots, but to no avail as U-M dropped the contest 2-1.
Michigan outshot OSU 20-16 on the afternoon, with Beall totaling six saves in goal.
Michigan returns home to close out the regular season with a pair of matches at U-M Soccer Stadium. On Thursday (Oct. 21), the Wolverines will host Penn State at 7 p.m on FS1. U-M's final regular-season match will take place Sunday (Oct. 24) when Maryland comes to Ann Arbor for a noon matchup.
