SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sophomore Riley Bertram scored the winning run on a wild pitch in extra innings and freshman Cameron Weston closed the door to lift the University of Michigan baseball team over Cal Poly, 4-3, to open up the weekend's three-game series at Baggett Field.
With the game tied at 3, Bertram led off the 10th inning with a bloop double down the left-field line, and a sacrifice bunt from senior Christan Bullock advanced him to third. As senior Matthew Schmidt stood in, the Cal Poly pitcher uncorked a wild one over Schmidt's head and brought home the go-ahead run.
Weston allowed a baserunner to reach to start the home half of the 10th, but after a strikeout the right-hander induced a game-ending double-play.
The late rally by Michigan completed a comeback, as Cal Poly had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The Mustangs took the first pitch of the home half of the first inning over the left-field wall and added another courtesy of an error, but then junior starter Jeff Criswell settled in.
Criswell retired 16 of the next 17 batters, including 10 in a row, and put the Wolverines in position to win. The right hander went 7.2 innings and gave up just three hits along the way.
After a quiet first trip through the order, the Michigan bats came alive in the middle frames. The Wolverines plated their first two runs of the game thanks to a two-out, two-run double by junior Jack Blomgren in the fifth inning. After collecting just one hit the first time through the order, U-M smacked six over the next three innings, including two doubles.
U-M went ahead thanks to an eighth-inning single by redshirt sophomore Danny Zimmerman that drove home junior Joe Donovan. With the game knotted at 2, Donovan reached base safely and advanced to second courtesy of a Cal Poly error. After a sacrifice bunt by Bertram, Zimmerman stood tall and delivered the go-ahead run on a laser single past the third baseman.
Michigan and Cal Poly will continue their three-game series Saturday (Feb. 29) at 4 p.m. PST at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, California.
