SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team could not hang on to its late lead against Cal Poly, falling, 5-4, to the Mustangs in 10Â innings Saturday (Feb. 29) to even the series at Baggett Stadium.
After grabbing a 4-2 lead in the seventh, Cal Poly inched closer with a single run in the bottom of the frame and then tied the game in the home half of the ninth. The Mustangs loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the 10th and came through with an RBI single to left-center to win the game.
After collecting just two hits in the first six innings and trailing, 2-0, the Wolverines started the seventh frame with three straight hits. Junior Joe Donovan doubled to begin the frame and sophomore Riley Bertram followed with a double of his own to put U-M on the board.
A single from freshman Jimmy Obertop and a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Dominic Clementi loaded the bases, and an error on a Jordan Nwogu flyout allowed the tying run to score. With two outs, freshman Clark Elliott smacked a line drive to right field to bring home two and put the Maize and Blue on top, 4-2.
The lead would not hold as Cal Poly put runners on in every inning, tying the game in the ninth on a double play, and winning an inning later.
Bertram was the lone Wolverine to tally a multi-hit game, finishing with two doubles. Every starting offensive player reached base at least once in the game for Michigan.
Michigan and Cal Poly will play for the series victory Sunday (Mar. 1) at 1 p.m. PST at Baggett Stadium.
