Mead's Four Goals Lead Michigan to Home-Opening Win over Louisville

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With a combined seven goals from Kaitlyn Mead and Maggie Kane, the No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team sealed a 15-11 victory over Louisville on Friday afternoon (Feb. 21) in the Wolverines' home opener at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
U-M outshot Louisville, 37-27, and won 18 draw controls compared to the Cardinals' 10. The Wolverines also converted on six of its seven free-position shots in its home-opener.
Mead led Michigan with a career-best four goals, while Kane recorded her second straight hat trick. Sophomores Erin Garvey and Kaley Thompson also produced multi-goal outings, scoring two each with Garvey scoring the eventual game-winner with 6:38 remaining in the contest.
Junior Caitlin Muir had a big outing for U-M with five points, which included a career-best four assists and one goal.
On the draw, junior Erin Daly won five and Molly Garrettt added six draw-control victories, marking her third straight game with four draw wins or more. Kane added three draw-control wins for the Wolverines.
Defensively, Muir and Garvey each had three caused turnovers, while Mead and Caroline Witkowski had two each.
In goal, Alli Kothari earned her first start of the season making eight saves, while Arielle Weissman played the final 19 minutes and made one save.
Michigan jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the Cardinals as five different players scored a goal in the opening 10 minutes of play. The Wolverines extended their lead to 6-1 before three straight goals from Louisville brought it within two, 6-4, with 14 mintues remaining in the half.
Kane added one final Michigan goal in the opening half, but Louisville closed the gap to one heading into halftime with the Wolverines leading, 7-6.
The teams exchanged goals after the halftime break before the Cardinals knotted the score at 9 with just over 20 minutes remaining.
Michigan took a two-goal advantage, 11-9, on a Garrett free position but once again Louisville came back to tie the score at 11 with just over 11 minutes remaining.
Muir found Garvey, who fired a shot into the middle of the net with 6:38 remaining to give the Wolverines a 12-11 lead. The Wolverines tacked on three more goals in the closing minutes to ice the win.
Michigan will cap off its weekend Sunday (Feb. 23) with a contest against No. 18 Colorado at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game is scheduled for a noon start and will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
