BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Senior Fay Keijer posted her second career multi-goal game and had a hand in four goals as the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team opened Big Ten Conference play with a dominant 5-0 decision at Indiana on Friday afternoon (Sept. 27) at the IU Field Hockey Complex. It was the Wolverines' fifth straight win and third straight shutout.
Michigan scored four of its five goals off its penalty-corner attack, including two in quick succession in the first quarter to build an early lead. Keijer opened scoring at the 9:06 mark -- she has scored U-M's first goal in three of the last four games -- after corralling a corner rebound in front and sending a reverse chip into the cage from her knees. U-M struck again just two minutes later, at 11:07, when junior/sophomore Emma Tamer hammered in a direct shot for her first collegiate goal. Keijer and senior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort earned assists on the insert and stop, respectively.
Keijer added her goal off another corner rebound late in the second half, at 26:44. The Wolverine senior laid out in an attempt to tip the initial shot; it instead rebounded high off the IU goalkeeper, and Keijer popped and batted it out of the air and into the cage. Keijer boasts four goals over the last four games; it is her first multi-goal effort since her freshman season (2016).
The Wolverines tacked on two more goals in the second half to continue to pull away. Junior Kayla Reed posted her team-best fifth marker of the season with a roofed shot at the 43:40 mark at the end of the third quarter. She got the ball in the circle from freshman Nina Apoola, created some space to the left and dove to launch a reverse chip high into the cage. Sophomore Tina D'Anjolell closed the scoring with a goal-line tap-in from the left post off another penalty corner at 51:10; Keijer earned the assist on the play.
Michigan outshot the Hoosiers, 21-1, and outcornered them, 10-1. It is the second time this season that the Wolverines held an opponent to one shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned a fourth-quarter save to preserve the shutout, while Indiana's Sachi Ananias stopped nine of 14 U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (6-2) will wrap up their Big Ten road weekend at Northwestern on Sunday (Sept. 29) in Evanston, Illinois, to take on the Wildcats at noon CDT at Lakeside Field. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
