MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team picked up its second weekend win -- and third in a row -- in decisive fashion, as it downed in-state foe Central Michigan, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 15) at the Chippewas' CMU Field Hockey Complex. It was the Wolverines' 10th straight shutout win against Central Michigan.
Michigan dominated the Chippewas in the offensive categories. The Wolverines outshot them, 31-3, and outcornered CMU, 9-2, but struggled to find the back of the cage until late in the first half.
Senior Fay Keijer broke through with a penalty-corner rebound -- her second of the weekend -- at the 28:05 mark. Sophomore Sofia Southam's direct shot banged hard off CMU goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole, but Keijer controlled the rebound and chipped a shot over the sprawling goalie.
The Wolverines struck again with a corner goal in the third quarter, at 38:16, with another corner rebound from sophomore Kathryn Peterson. Senior Meg Dowthwaite hammered two shots on goal from the top of the scoring arc -- the direct shot then her own rebound -- before Peterson, who was inserted to initiate the corner, got her stick on the second rebound and lifted it into the cage. It was her third goal of the season.
Dowthwaite tallied one of her own -- her team-best fourth this fall -- in the fourth quarter, at 49:05, when she got her stick on a crossing pass and tapped it in from the left post.
Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned two saves in the Wolverine cage -- both late in the second quarter when CMU drew a pair of penalty corners to mount its biggest scoring threat. She combined with junior Sidonie LaPlante for the Wolverines' second shutout win of the season. The Chippewas' Ebersole stopped 16 of 19 Michigan shots on goal.
The Wolverines (4-2) will return home to face another MAC opponent when they host Kent State at 1 p.m. next Sunday (Sept. 22) at Phyllis Ocker Field. Michigan also will host a neutral-site meeting between KSU and Iowa at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 21). Admission is free to both games.
