WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell to Wake Forest, 4-0, on Thursday night (Aug. 30) at Spry Stadium in the Wolverines' first road match of the season.
Senior Reilly Martin paced Michigan with three shots putting two on goal, while sophomore Alia Martin had one shot reach the net.
Nonie Frishette earned the win in net as she made four saves on the night for the Demon Deacons. Estelle Laurier led the Wake Forest offense with one goal and two assists, while Ryanne Brown scored the game-winner with the first goal of the night, while Abby McNamara and Hulda Arnarsdottir added a goal each.
Wake Forest had the first opportunity of the match to open the scoring when Hannah Betfort broke through the defense and fired a shot from eight yards out, but Nino was there to make the save for the Maize and Blue to keep the match scoreless in the 20th minute.
Michigan looked to score off a corner kick in the 22nd minute when Janiece Joyner snuck into the 18-yard box and headed a ball inches wide of the left goal post.
Minutes later, the Demon Deacons used a cross from the right side of the field on to Brown, who headed it into the back of the net from seven yards out. Wake Forest quickly extended its lead to 2-0 when it scored less than a minute later on a shot from Laurier into the bottom-left corner of the net.
Wake Forest came out of the locker room and picked up where it left off, adding its third goal of the game just a minute into the second half to take a 3-0 advantage over the Wolverines. The Demon Deacons added one final tally in the 74th minute to take the victory over Michigan.
U-M saw two late opportunities when Nicki Hernandez placed a shot just shy of the right goal post and Ashley Calcagno put one just past the goal post as well as Wake Forest locked up the shutout.
The Wolverines will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 2 when they take on Florida Gulf Coast at 1 p.m. in Fort Myers, Florida.
