ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior goalie Tommy Heidt of the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team will return to Michigan for a fifth season, head coach Kevin Conry announced Tuesday (July 17).
Heidt, who earned a medical hardship waiver due to missing the 2015 season due to injury, will play the 2019 campaign as a graduate student. Last season, he set the U-M record for goals-against in a season at 10.11 after missing the first six games of the season due to injury. The 2017 team MVP also eclipsed the 10-save plateau in seven contests, and also marked a trio of 15-save games.
Heidt ranks second all-time for saves in a career (246) as well as goals-against average (10.63), and is the program's all-time leader in wins (13).
"Tommy's return is great news for us as a program, our defensive unit and our team as a whole," said Conry of Heidt's return. "Through the latter part of last season, he showed he has the ability to be one of the top goaltenders in not only the Big Ten, but on the national scene as well."
The Greenwich, Connecticut, native will enroll in the U-M Masters of Social Work program after graduating with a general studies degree this past spring.
With Heidt returning to the fold, the Wolverines are projected to return nine regular starters from last year, and their top-five point scorers from a team that went 8-6 overall in Conry's first season in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines set high-water marks for highest rankings in both national polls, checking in as high as No. 15 in the Maverik media poll and 17th in the USILA poll. Wins over ranked opponents on the road vs. No. 4 Notre Dame on March 21 and No. 14 Penn State in overtime (April 28) finished out the season on a high note.
