NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan baseball team recorded a hit in nearly every inning on Friday night (March 9) as the Wolverines rolled to a 16-11 win over the Lipscomb Bisons in the first contest of the three-game series at Dugan Field.
Michigan got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning. Junior Ako Thomas led off for the Wolverines and reached on an error before an outfield hit by redshirt junior Miles Lewis gave Michigan two runners on base. Thomas then stole third, and an run-scoring single from junior Jonathan Engelmann sent Thomas home for a 1-0 Wolverine lead.
Lipscomb responded in the bottom of the frame with one run to tie the score, but Michigan added two in the top of the second for a defining lead. Junior Jimmy Kerr led the effort with a free base on a hit by pitch, and freshman Joe Donovan followed with an single. Two outs later, Thomas was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Lewis was also hit by a pitch to send Kerr home. A wild pitch followed, and Donovan beat the throw home to put Michigan up, 3-1.
With left-handed starter Tommy Henry holding the Bisons to just two hits over the next four innings, the Wolverines tacked on runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to push the Michigan lead to 13-1 through five innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, nearly two-and-a-half hours after the game began, the Bisons rallied for two runs on two walks and a single, cutting Michigan's lead to 13-3.
The Wolverines did not score in the sixth or seventh innings, which allowed the momentum to swing back into the Bisons' favor. In addition to a two-run sixth, Lipscomb took advantage of two walks and two hits to score four more runs in the seventh, bringing the score to 13-7, in favor of the Maize and Blue.
Michigan got back to its scoring ways with a run in the top of the eighth thanks to a leadoff triple from redshirt freshman Harrison Salter and a sacrifice fly from junior Blake Nelson. The Wolverines extended their lead to 16-7 in the ninth with a leadoff single from freshman Jordan Nwogu and a two-run blast by Engelmann over the left-field wall.
The Bisons rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth on five walks, a sac fly and two singles. Despite the late effort by the home team, freshman left-handed pitcher Angelo Smith got a strikeout to end the game.
In total, the Wolverines racked up 13 hits and walked eight times with four hit batters for a season-high 16 runs. Nwogu's single in the ninth marked his first career hit, and a Donovan's fifth-inning double marked his first hit for extra bases.
Henry allowed just three runs on four hits through six innings of work. The lefty also struck out four en route to his first win of the season.
Redshirt sophomore Benjamin Keizer, junior Troy Miller and Smith combined to close out the game for Michigan. The trio surrendered eight runs on four hits and seven walks.
Michigan and Lipscomb will continue the three-game series on Saturday (March 10) with a single contest. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. CST at Dugan Field in Nashville, Tennessee, and fans can watch the game streamed live on ESPN3.
