NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Four runs in the top of the fourth inning were not enough on Saturday (March 10) for the University of Michigan baseball team, as a five-run fifth by the Lipscomb Bisons was the difference in 7-4 Wolverines loss the second game of a three-game series at Dugan Field.
Neither team garnered any offense through the first two innings, but the Bisons got on the board in the bottom of the third with two hits and a fielder's choice to give Lipscomb a 1-0 lead.
Michigan responded with four runs in the top of the fourth to flip the scoreboard and give the Wolverines a  4-1 advantage. Sophomore Christan Bullock jump-started the inning with a leadoff walk and took second on a wild pitch, but a lineout and a strikeout quickly put two outs on the board. Redshirt freshman Marcus Chavez ignited a two-out rally with a single to right field that allowed Bullock to score from second and tie the score at 1. A walk to junior Jimmy Kerr followed, and a single by freshman Joe Donovan gave Michigan the go-ahead run. With two men still on base, senior Brock Keener kept the rally alive with a base hit to right field that cleared the bases and put the Wolverines up by three.
Lipscomb picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth, and brought the momentum into the fifth as the Bisons' offense rallied for five runs and a defining 7-4 lead.
Following a Miles Lewis single in the top of the fifth, he later became the lead runner on a double-play, and the Wolverines did not have another hit or a baserunner for the remainder of the game.
Michigan totaled just five hits in the contest, including a team-high two from Keener and one apiece from Chavez, Donovan and Lewis. All five hits were singles.
Sophomore Karl Kauffmann took the loss for the Wolverines on Saturday, as he allowed four earned runs through 4.2 innings of work. Freshman lefty Ben Dragani also appeared on the mound for the Wolverines, and surrendered just one hit and a walk through 3.1 innings of relief.
Michigan's four errors mark a season high for the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines and Bisons will wrap up their three-game series at Dugan Field on Sunday (March 11). First pitch of the series finale was originally slated for 1 p.m. CDT, but was moved up to 11 a.m. CDT due to forecasted weather in the area.Â
