NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan baseball team took an early 2-0 lead to open the game, but surrendered four runs over the third and fourth innings to drop a 4-2 decision at Lipscomb in the final game of their three-game series on Sunday (March 11) at Dugan Field.
Much like the first two games of the series, Michigan struck first to gain an early lead. Redshirt junior Miles Lewis got things started in the top of the first inning with a one-out walk and took second on a wild pitch. A flyout advanced Lewis to third, and he scored when senior Brock Keener doubled down the left-field line to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Redshirt senior Hector Gutierrez then sent an run-scoring single to left-center field which drove in Keener from second and put the Wolverines up, 2-0.
Neither team scored in the second, but Lipscomb rallied to come from behind with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the defining lead.
The Bisons tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Michigan's relievers kept Lipscomb scoreless the rest of the way.
Michigan put runners on base in all but the second and third innings, but stranded eight runners throughout the contest, including three in the top of the ninth.
The Wolverines recorded nine total hits in the game to the Bisons' seven. Keener and sophomore Dominic Clementi, who came in to pitch-hit in the seventh and remained in the game as the designated hitter, each recorded a team-high two hits apiece.
The loss is Michigan's second straight after the it won the series opener, 16-11, on Friday (March 9).
Due to a late pitching scratch, senior right-hander Jayce Vancena made an unscheduled start in Sunday's game and tossed 2.1 innings and allowed three runs. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jack Weisenburger took the mound in relief and threw a career-high 3.2 innings while freshman righty Jeff Criswell closed out the game with a career-high two innings of work.
The Wolverines will return to action on Tuesday (March 13) with their first home contest of the 2018 season. First pitch against Oakland is set for 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
