CATONSVILLE, Md. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team improved its record to 7-2 with a 9-6 win over the UMBC Retrievers Saturday (March 24) at UMBC Stadium. Senior goalie Tommy Heidt stopped 13 shots in goal, while junior Brent Noseworthy had four goals for his sixth hat trick of the season.
The Wolverines got off to a slow start, falling behind 1-0 just under nine minutes into the contest. U-M did not even things up until the 4:52 mark of the quarter, when junior Decker Curran marked his 14th goal of the season to tie the score, 1-1.
U-M then went on a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 lead, with goals coming from Noseworthy, freshman Kevin Mack and senior Chase Young. Following a Retriever goal, freshman Alex Buckanavage scored with one second left on the clock to give U-M at 5-2 lead going into the half.
Both Heidt, who made eight saves in the first half, and freshman faceoff man Connor Cronin, who won 11-of-18 draws at the dot in the game, proved crucial.
In the second half, the Retrievers (2-6) came within two goals on four separate occasions. A goal by UMBC's Mad Haldeman made it 8-6 with 1:40 to go in the fourth, but Noseworthy's fourth and final goal, on a helper from Buckanavage with 1:07 to go, iced the victory.
Michigan turned the ball over 17 times, one off its season high of 18, and was outshot, 42-26. Conversely, the Wolverines won the ground-ball battle for the fourth time this year, 25-15.
