Michigan Drops First Big Ten Game at No. 11 Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped its first Big Ten Conference game of the year Friday night, 16-7, at the hands of 11th-ranked Northwestern in a game played in Martin Stadium.
Northwestern jumped on top at the 27:51 mark but Chandler Kirby answered six minutes later on a free-position shot as the teams headed into the game's first media timeout. The Wildcats won the ensuing draw control and drew a foul before quickly scoring on the reset on Sheila Nesselbush's first goal of the night at the 20:54 mark. Selena Lasota made it 3-1 with a free position shot.
Danita Stroup then gave NU its fourth goal scorer of the night when she took a feed from Holly Korn and beat Mira Shane to the stick side for her 13th goal of the season and a 4-1 Wildcat lead at the 16:54 mark.
Stroup and Nesselbush added two more shortly after to make it 7-2 en route to a 9-4 halftime margin. Michigan did not threaten after that point as the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run spanning the halves to take a 15-4 lead.
Michigan responded with three goals before the final Wildcats' goal of the night.
Kirby and Bianca Brueckner paced the Wolverines with two goals apiece while Caitlin Muir had a goal and two assists.
Nesselbush led the way for Northwestern with her second hat trick of the season and added two assists and two draw controls. Lasota, Stroup, Megan Kinna and Korn had two goals apiece.
The Wolverines will have a quick turnaround as they will play host to Detroit Mercy on Sunday at 1 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. It will be Dollar Day at the Stadium with $1 admission and select $1 concessions items.
