BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team pulled within two midway through the second half, but Johns Hopkins closed the game on a 6-1 run, giving the Blue Jays their first win in Big Ten Conference play, 15-8, on Saturday (April 8) at Homewood Field.
Senior Kim Coughlan led Michigan with two goals and one assist, while freshman Chandler Kirby added one goal and one assist in her first collegiate start. On the defensive end, sophomore/freshman goalie Alli Kothari came off the bench to make eight saves in the final 40 minutes of action.
Johns Hopkins won the opening draw and took the ball straight to goal, but Mira Shane came up with the big save. Hopkins maintained possession after the shot until Madeline Dion earned a caused turnover and ground ball to give the Wolverines their first offensive possession.
Michigan capitalized quickly as Kirby fed Coughlan for the first goal of the game at the 28:07 mark. Just 31 seconds later, U-M struck again as Jess Angerman scored unassisted to give the Maize and Blue an early 2-0 advantage.
Hopkins turned the tide and quickly depleted Michigan's lead, scoring eight straight goals to take an 8-2 lead with 10:13 remaining in the opening half. Kothari then came in to replace Shane in the cage.
The Wolverines held the Blue Jays scoreless for the final 10 minutes of the half with the help of two saves from Kothari. Kirby ended Johns Hopkins' run, as she scored unassisted with 23 seconds left on the clock to make it 8-3 Hopkins at the break.
Michigan picked up where it left off, scoring the first two goals of the second half. Coughlan drove right and scored unassisted at 29:22, and then freshman Molly Garrett won the ensuing draw control and went straight to cage, scoring 13 seconds later to make it 8-5 Johns Hopkins.
The Blue Jays slowed Michigan's run with a goal at 28:01, and then both teams went scoreless for the next eight-plus minutes. U-M freshman Lilly Grass kept the momentum going, as Coughlan fed her just outside the crease for the quick score at 19:40. Less than two minutes later, senior Anna Schueler fed senior/junior Bianca Brueckner near the edge of the crease, and Brueckner's goal brought Michigan within two, 9-7, with 17:44 to play.
Johns Hopkins called timeout to regroup and then scored four unanswered goals to push its lead back to six, 13-7, at the 9:42 mark. The Wolverines refused to quit, as Kothari came up with big saves, and Michigan's defense earned a couple key stops down the stretch. Senior defender Emily Braun picked up a ground ball off her own caused turnover and took the ball the length of the field to score her first goal of the season with 3:53 remaining. The Blue Jays tallied the final two goals of the game to produce the final score of 15-8.
Overall, 26 Wolverines saw action in today's game, demonstrating U-M's depth in multiple positions. Garrett finished the game with a game-high four draw controls, matching her career high.
