ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite a program-record eight goals by senior Kim Coughlan, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell to Rutgers in a close finish, 16-14, on Thursday (April 13) inside Michigan Stadium.
Five different Wolverines scored tonight, including Coughlan's record-breaking eight goals. Coughlan set a new career high and program record, the previous were both five, and now leads the Big Ten with the most goals scored by any player in a single game this season. Joining Coughlan in the scoring column were Natalie Carti with two goals, both assisted by Chandler Kirby, Bianca Brueckner with two goals, and Adriana Pendino and Jess Angerman with one each. Angerman also dished out four assists for the third time this season.
The Scarlet Knights started the first half with a nine-minute, 4-0 run before Coughlan ended the streak, recording her first goal of the game on a free-position shot, followed by a second goal two minutes later on an assist from Anna Schueler. With the Wolverines down 5-2, Kirby connected with Carti to bring U-M within two, 5-3. Rutgers constructed a 3-0 run -- to go up 8-3 -- which was stopped when Kirby found Carti again (watch below), in nearly the same spot as the previous U-M goal, to make it 8-4 with 10:24 to play in the half.

Rutgers then went on a 3-1 run to finish the half, with Coughlan driving up the middle to secure her 18th career hat trick, to make it an 11-5 Scarlet Knight lead at the half.
Coughlan picked up where the left off, scoring the first goal of the second half just 40 seconds in and adding another at the 27:47 mark. Pendino then scored on an assist from Angerman just 43 seconds later to make it 12-8.
U-M and Rutgers exchanged goals until 17:08 when Coughlan scored on a free-position shot to reach a new career high and program record (6). Rutgers responded with back-to-back goals to go up 15-10, but U-M answered with a 3-0 run of its own to cut Rutgers' lead back to two, 15-13, at the 9:10 mark.
Coughlan continued her career night, contributing her last two goals during that run, in addition to Brueckner's first goal. Rutgers responded with a goal at the five-minute mark to regain a three-goal lead, 16-13. Brueckner tried to stage the comeback by scoring one with 45 seconds left in the game, making it 16-14, but U-M fell short.
Overall, Michigan won the draw for the 11th time this season, 17-15. Emily Braun made a significant contribution to the draw, recording a career-high five draw controls, while Schueler had a game-high six. Maggie Handlan recorded a career-high two draw controls and ground balls.
