ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On the University of Michigan women's lacrosse program's first senior day, the Wolverines honored their 15 seniors prior to a 17-10 setback to No. 5 Penn State in the season finale on Sunday (April 30) inside Michigan Stadium.
Seven Wolverines scored in the contest, all of which were seniors. Anna Schueler, Kim Coughlan and Bianca Brueckner led Michigan with two goals each. In addition to her two goals, Schueler recorded two assists and a game-high eight draw controls. Jess Angerman, Sophie duPhily, Natalie Carti and Lauren Oberlander each added one goal. On the defensive end, sophomore goalie Mira Shane made a career-high 13 saves.
The Nittany Lions started the first half with a pair of goals just 18 seconds apart, but the Wolverines responded with two of their own to tie the game, 2-2, with 23:52 on the clock. Coughlan scored her first goal of the game as Tess Korten found her on the crease, and then less than a minute later Schueler drove down the middle and scored unassisted.
Following another 2-0 run by Penn State, Schueler scored her second goal of the game on a rocket from outside the eight, pulling the Wolverines within one, 4-3, with 12:46 to go in the half. With Penn State leading 5-3, U-M scored two straight to tie the game for the second time. The first was a feed from behind from duPhily to Oberlander, followed by a goal from Carti on the assist from fellow senior Allie Breitfeller at 8:28. The Nittany Lions ended the half on a 3-0 run to make the halftime score 8-5.
Brueckner put the Wolverines on the board first in the second half, as Coughlan fed her curling around the crease to make it 8-6 with 28:10 to play. Penn State pulled away with a four-goal run to increase its lead to 12-6 with 21:22 left. The Wolverines stopped the run with a two-goal effort. Brueckner scored her second goal of the game on a feed from the right elbow from Oberlander at the 20:07 mark. About six minutes later, Coughlan scored her second goal of the game to make it 12-8.
The Wolverines responded to a Penn State goal at 8:41 with a goal of their own at 8:07. Angerman converted a one-timer on a feed from Schueler from the right wing to make it 13-9. The Nittany Lions went on another 4-0 run over a seven-minute span to extend their lead to eight, 17-9, with 1:13 to play, before duPhily netted the final goal of the game with 14 ticks left on the clock on an assist from Schueler to produce the final score to 17-10.
The Wolverines won the draw for the 12th time this season, edging Penn State, 16-13. As the pioneers of the women's lacrosse program, several seniors ended their careers with numerous program records. Coughlan left her mark on the program, recording a program-high 124 career goals. Schueler finishes with a program-high 239 draw controls, more than double any other U-M player, as well as 100 career ground balls. Angerman holds the program record for points with 166 and assists with 55. With one caused turnover today, Madeline Dion leads the program with 80 career caused turnovers.
Prior to today's final game of the 2017 season, Michigan honored the program's first senior class. The 15 seniors that remain from U-M's inaugural team received their degrees from the University of Michigan at yesterday's (Saturday, April 29) commencement ceremony in Michigan Stadium. The program would like to thank them for laying a foundation and developing a culture that will be built on by future generations of Michigan women's lacrosse players. Today also marked the final game in Michigan Stadium for the women's lacrosse program, as its brand new facility will open in time for the 2018 season.
