ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite multi-hit efforts from four Wolverines, the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan baseball team came up short on Saturday afternoon (April 22), falling to Indiana by a score of 12-9 in the second contest of the weekend series inside the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The loss marks just the second time this season the Wolverines have dropped two consecutive contests.
Junior righty Ryan Nutof got off to a hot start for the Wolverines, using only 10 pitches to post a 1-2-3 first inning. Much like Friday evening (April 21), however, Indiana jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the second inning with a two-run shot over the left-field wall.
The Wolverines answered in the bottom of the same frame, tying the score at 2-2. Sophomore Miles Lewis led off the inning with a base hit to left-center field and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from junior Jake Bivens. A wild pitch then pushed Lewis to third, and an RBI single from sophomore Nick Poirier scored Lewis to put Michigan on the board. From there, sophomore Jonathan Engelmann kept the rally alive by beating out an infield single, and with two men on, sophomore Jimmy Kerr rose to the occasion with an RBI double to tie the score.
Indiana responded with back-to-back home runs in the top of the third, followed by three runs in the fourth to go up 7-2.
Michigan answered in the bottom of the fourth by loading up the bases with no outs on consecutive singles from Bivens, Poirier and Engelmann. With the bases full, Kerr again came up clutch with a sacrifice fly to deep center field. The Wolverines tacked on another run on the next play, as a fielder's choice allowed Poirier to score and put Michigan within three.
For the fourth consecutive inning, however, Indiana's offense posted multiple runs, extending the lead to 11-4 in the top of the fifth. Following a scoreless sixth, Michigan picked up another run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from Brdar.
Indiana got one back in the top of the eighth, but a grand slam off the bat of senior Harrison Wenson in the bottom of the inning put Michigan back within three.
Despite Michigan's late rally, the Hoosiers held on for the 12-9 win to clinch the weekend series.
Overall, the Wolverines combined for 12 hits on the day. Engelmann led the way with three hits, while Lewis, Wenson and Poirier each recorded two-hit outings. Indiana's 12 runs marks the most the Wolverines have allowed in a single game this season.
Michigan and Indiana will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday (April 23) with the series finale. First pitch is slated for noon at the Wilpon Complex, Home of Ray Fisher Stadium. [ Tickets ]
