ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Nearly every Wolverine recorded a run and an RBI on Sunday (April 23) as the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan baseball team rallied for a 12-5 victory over Indiana in the Big Ten series finale at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Wolverines and marks the end of Michigan's scheduled 18-game homestand.
After a quick outing in the top of the first, Michigan took to the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning for an early 4-0 lead. The Wolverines recorded just one hit in the frame -- an RBI single by sophomore Nick Poirier -- but two walks and two hit batters gave Michigan the momentum needed to rally for four runs.
Indiana got three runs back in the top of the third inning on two single and a double to come within one, but after two scoreless innings, Michigan rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 9-3.
Senior Johnny Slater led off the bottom half of the sixth inning with a solo home run to deep centerfield, and the momentum was set from there. A single by senior Michael Brdar continued the rally, and after a pitching change, a groundout pushed Brdar to second. He followed with a stolen base and scored easily on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Miles Lewis. With one out on the board, Poirier was hit by a pitch, and sophomore Jonathan Engelmann sent a base hit through the left side to load the bases. Freshman Joe Pace then followed with a sacrifice flyout to score Lewis, and a walk to senior Harrison Wenson loaded the bases with two away. The scoring ended as junior Jake Bivens sent a 1-0 pitch to left-center field for a base hit, scoring two more runs and putting the Wolverines up by six.
After a scoreless seventh, the Hoosiers picked up a run in the top of the eighth, but Michigan added three more in the bottom of the inning on RBI from Wenson, Slater and Brdar.
Despite trailing 12-4, Indiana rallied for a run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly, but Michigan appealed to second base and a base-running error resulted in the final out the game.
Lefty starter Michael Hendrickson earned the win for Michigan in the victory, improving to 4-1 on the season. The junior tossed six complete innings and allowed just three hits on the day while striking out five.
Senior Mac Lozer was the first of four pitchers to appear in relief, and he tossed the top of the seventh inning. Despite surrendering his first walk of the season, the righty recorded a flyout and two strikeouts to get out of the inning with nothing hurt.
Freshman Tommy Henry and senior Jackson Lamb combined to pitch the next inning. The pair allowed for a combined one run on two hits with three strikeouts, before senior Keith Lehmann came in to close out the ninth.
