COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan baseball team used four scoring innings to defeat Maryland by a 6-2 score on Sunday (March 26) in the Big Ten Conference series finale inside Turtle Smith Stadium.
The victory is Michigan's first Big Ten win of the season and snaps a two-game losing streak.
Much like Saturday's contest, Michigan got on the board early in the final game of the series to take a one-run lead. Sophomore Ako Thomas led off in the top of the first with an outfield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A groundout then pushed him to third, and a Maryland error allowed the sophomore to score for a 1-0 Michigan lead.
Maryland responded in the bottom of the same inning, stringing together back-to-back hits to tie the game at 1-1.
Following a scoreless second and third, the Wolverines rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead, 4-1. Senior Johnny Slater led off the outing, sending a 0-2 pitch through the left side for a base hit. Senior Michael Brdar followed with a walk, and the pair moved into scoring position on a Maryland passed ball. Another passed ball allowed Slater to score easily, and a walk to junior Drew Lugbauer gave Michigan two men on once more. Sophomore Miles Lewis continued the rally, sending a single up the middle to score Brdar and send Lugabuer to second. From there, a fielder's choice pushed Lugbauer to third and a wild pitch allowed him to score for a 4-1 Michigan lead.
The Wolverines tacked on another run in the top of the fifth to go ahead by four. Slater again led off the inning for the Maize and Blue, sending a double to straight away centerfield. Brdar then singled through the right side to push Slater to third, and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Lugbauer allowed Slater to score and put Michigan up 5-1.
Michigan added another in the sixth, as sophomore Nick Poirier led off with a double down the left-field line. One out later, Thomas sent a 1-1 pitch through the left side for a base hit, and a sac fly from Slater scored Poirier from third to put the Wolverines up, 6-1.
Maryland responded in the bottom of the same inning, however, adding one run on back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly. Despite the last offense, Michigan held the Terps scoreless through the next three innings to pick up the 6-2 Big Ten victory.
Junior lefty Michael Hendrickson earned the victory for Michigan in the effort, tossing five complete inning and allowing just five hits with four strikeouts.
Senior Mac Lozer and freshman Tommy Henry also appeared in relief, combining to pitch 3.1 scoreless innings, before senior Jackson Lamb came in to earn his sixth save of the season.
Overall, Michigan tallied nine hits on the day, with Thomas, Slater and Brdar all recording multi-hit outings. All four of the Wolverines' scoring innings came when the leadoff hitter reached base.
