MACON, Ga. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 10-2 lead over Mercer at the half and led wire to wire in an 11-6 victory Thursday (March 2) at Five Star Stadium.
Michigan (5-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead early on, as sophomore Rocco Sutherland assisted on goals from sophomore Decker Curran at 11:38 and senior Christian Wolter at 9:37 of the opening quarter. Minutes later, freshman Avery Myers made it 3-0 at 7:35.
Mercer (1-3) brought the score to 5-2 with seven minutes to go in the second, but the Wolverines closed the half with five unanswered tallies. Senior Ian King had a hand in three of the goals, scoring at the 5:14 mark and later assisting on a marker from sophomore Brent Noseworthy at 1:19 and a Patrick Tracy goal with 46 second on the clock.
The Bears outscored the Wolverines 3-0 in the third quarter, closed the margin to 10-5. However, Michigan was able kill off a pair of Bear extra-man chances minutes apart that spanned the latter moments of the third and early in the fourth before junior Will Reynolds notched his first assist in a U-M uniform on a King goal with 11:37 to go in the fourth quarter.
With the 11-5 lead with just under 12 minutes to go, the U-M defense clamped down to allow only one more goal the rest of the way.
Sophomore longstick Nick DeCaprio excelled once again with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, while junior Michael McDonnell went 10-of-16 at the dot with a ground ball.
