SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used three scoring innings and six solid innings of work from junior LHP Oliver Jaskie to clinch a 6-1 victory over the Saint Louis Billikens on Friday (Feb. 24) in the first game of the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament at Santa Clara University. The loss is the Billikens' first of the season.
After a scoreless top of the first, Michigan jumped on the board quickly in the bottom of the inning, despite not recording a hit. Three consecutive walks loaded the bases for the Wolverines and a sacrifice fly from junior Drew Lugbauer scored sophomore Ako Thomas for the defining lead of the game. From there, Michigan took advantage of a Saint Louis error to plate another run and go ahead, 2-0.
Following a scoreless inning, Michigan added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Miles Lewis led off the inning with a walk and a single from Lugbauer put two men on. Two outs later, sophomore Nick Poirier blasted his second homer of the season, sending a long ball over the right field wall for a five-run lead.
An RBI single from Thomas scored senior Johnny Slater in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Billikens got one back in the top of the seventh on a solo homer.
The solo shot was the Billikens' only run of the day, as Michigan clinched a 6-1 victory to hand Saint Louis its first loss of the season.
Junior Oliver Jaskie picked up his first win of the season in the outing, tossing six complete innings and allowing just three hits with a season-high six strikeouts. He left runners stranded on base three times.
Sophomore Troy Miller and freshman Tommy Henry also toed the rubber, combining for three innings pitched and one strikeout.
Overall, Michigan recorded five hits in the contest, walking eight times. Slater and Thomas also recorded a stolen base apiece in the victory.
