LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team knocked off the Bellarmine Knights by a 13-5 score line Saturday (Feb. 18) at Bellarmine's Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Michigan (4-0), receiving votes in the latest Maverik/Inside Lacrosse Poll, got off to a slow start, shooting 0-of-12 to start the contest before finding its stride with nearly four minutes to go in the opening period. The Wolverines rattled off four straight goal to take a 4-0 lead with markers from sophomore Brent Noseworthy (4:17), classmate Nick DeCaprio (4:07), Decker Curran (1:27) and freshman Avery Myers (0:27) as the contest went into the first intermission.
In the second, Bellarmine's Tucker Cisseau bookended a pair of U-M goals from Curran and Noseworthy as the game went into the half with U-M holding a 6-2 advantage. In the opening half, U-M nearly doubled the Knights in shots (25-13) but shot a season-low 24 percent for the half.
Nearly a minute into the third period, senior Ian King assisted on a PJ Bogle goal at the 14:07 mark. The helper was King's second of the night and moved him into a tie for Michigan's career points record held by former teammate Kyle Jackson (2013-16).
Noseworthy went on to net a trio of goals in the third quarter to give him five on the night, two of which were assisted by Sutherland, as U-M extended its lead to 11-3 through three quarters and cruised to the 13-5 victory.
Once again, special teams played a huge role in the dominant win, as junior/sophomore Tommy Heidt was outstanding in goal, making 11 saves, while junior Michael McDonnell and freshman Matt Dellacroce combined to go 13-of-21 at the faceoff dot. The close defense trio of graduate student Dickson Smith, senior Andrew Hatton and junior Eric Smith was also instrumental in holding the Knights to the five goals on 31 shots, 16 of which were on cage.
With the 4-0 start to the season, U-M will face its first ranked opponent of the season when it meets No. 4 Notre Dame on Sunday (Feb. 26) in South Bend, Indiana. Faceoff is slated for 2 p.m. from Arlotta Stadium in a game that will be broadcast via ESPN3.
