GILBERT, Ariz. -- University of Michigan field hockey team seniors Katie Trombetta and Sam Swenson, and sophomore Meg Dowthwaite were named to Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-America teams, the NFHCA announced Tuesday (Dec. 5). Trombetta was selected to the first team, while Dowthwaite and Swenson earned second-team accolades.
Michigan was one of six programs to boast three or more All-America selections. U-M has had an All-American on its roster in 20 of the last 21 years, with 24 Wolverines combining for 39 total honors. It is the 11th time in program history that Michigan boasted multiple All-America selections and its most since similarly garnering three in 2010.
Trombetta, who previously earned NFHCA All-America third-team recognition last season, is the 11th different U-M player to garner first-team honors in program history and the second in three seasons. A primary striker on U-M's corner unit, she recorded four goals and a career-best 11 assists this season. As the Wolverines' field general, Trombetta anchored a defensive unit that posted a 0.81 goals-against average and just 7.46 shots allowed per game. She also was named the 2017 Big Ten Player of the Year and Big Ten Tournament MVP, and earned unanimous All-Big Ten first-team honors.
Dowthwaite garnered the first All-America honor of her career after registering 19 goals, eight assists and 46 points this season -- the most goals and points for a Michigan player in four seasons. Dowthwaite, who also earned All-Big Ten first-team honors after listing second in the league in scoring, tallied goals in 16 of 24 games and recorded eight game-winners, including the overtime marker against Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament first round.
Swenson, who became Michigan's first All-America goalkeeper with her second-team nod in 2015, repeated the feat this season after posting a 0.80 goals-against average and .816 save percentage -- both figures ranked second nationally as did her .864 win-loss percentage in the cage. Michigan led the nation with 16 shutouts, including 13 complete-game efforts by Swenson. She was named the 2017 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a unanimous All-Big Ten first-team selection.
The Wolverines finished the 2017 season with a 21-3 record -- a program record for wins -- en route to the Big Ten Conference regular-season and tournament titles, and a berth in the NCAA Tournament semifinals.
