6/14/2016 12:00:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
• Team Captains: Chase Brown, Gerald Logan, Kyle Jackson, Mikie Schlosser
• Record: 3-10 overall, 0-5 Big Ten Conference (6th place)
Under the direction of fifth-year head coach John Paul, the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team began the 2016 season going 3-2 in its first five games, which included a 9-8 win over Colgate, the highest ranked team the Wolverines have defeated in program history. U-M finished with a 2-4 record at home and a 1-6 record away from Ann Arbor, and ended the season with a record of 3-10. Michigan played the 20th-toughest schedule in the country, including three of the four NCAA Final Four participants and eventual NCAA champion North Carolina. Senior longstick midfielder Chase Brown was named All-Big Ten Honorable mention for his stellar season.
Team Highlights
• The starting attack unit combined for 63 goals, 27 assists and 90 of U-M's 185 points on the season, even with senior Kyle Jackson and junior Ian King missing significant time due to injury. Senior Peter Kraus, who started 12 of U-M's 13 contests, was second on the team in goals with 23.
• The Wolverines once again played one of the most difficult slates coming in with 20th-toughest schedule in the NCAA. Five teams made the NCAA Tournament. Three teams (North Carolina, Brown and Maryland) made the Final Four while the Tar Heels went on to win the NCAA title.
• U-M defeated its highest ranked opponent in school history, downing Colgate 9-8 on Feb. 14. The Raiders, a traditionally strong program, entered the contest ranked just outside of the consensus top-20 poll.
Individual Highlights
• Attackman Kyle Jackson, who missed four games due to injury, was unable to play in the NCAA mandated 75 percent of contests played to qualify for statistical categories. Jackson finished the season with 29 goals in nine games for a 3.22 goals/game average. The number would have ranked No. 5 in the NCAA and first in the Big Ten had he qualified in the category. Jackson also set a new single-season school record for points (36).
• Junior Ian King broke the U-M single-season assist record with 17 helpers, besting the previous mark held by Will Meter in 2012. King, who missed two games during the campaign due to injury, had a helper in nine of the 11 games played, including a season-high three against eventual national champion North Carolina.
• Senior Chase Brown was named honorable mention All-Big Ten as he led the team in ground balls with 41, setting the U-M single-season record for a non-faceoff man. The 3.15 pick-ups per game ranked No. 5 in the conference and No. 70 nationally. The captain also led the Big Ten and ranked No. 17 nationally with 21 caused turnovers. He was named B1G Defender of the Week on two occasions and tied the single-game school record with five caused turnovers vs. Maryland on April 2. Additionally, he became the first Michigan longstick to score a pair of goals in a game (vs. Penn State, April 30) and finished the season with three goals on nine shots.
• Senior/junior Gerald Logan was named EPOCH National Player of the Week for his performance in the 9-8 win over Colgate on Feb. 14. Logan stopped 15 shots in the victory, and collected three ground balls. He is the second player in team history to be named national player of the week.
