THINGS TO KNOW
Sitting at 3-2 following a 15-13 win over Vermont on March 5 inside a snowy Michigan Stadium, the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team (3-2) travels to No. 5 Brown (4-0) on Saturday (March 12) for a 1 p.m. face-off from Stevenson-Pincince Field. The 3-2 mark is tied for the best start to a season in U-M varsity history.
WOLVERINE BITES
Senior attackman Kyle Jackson, the back-to-back Big Ten Offensive player of the week honoree, ranks No. 3 in the NCAA in goals per game (3.80) and leads the team in overall goals with 19. Jackson has scored at least three goals in each game this season and is already only five goals off his career high of 24 that he set during his sophomore season. His six points (3g., 3a.) in the win over Vermont tie for the second most in a single contest in program history, while he is one of only six players to have at least three assists in a contest.
Jackson is joined on the attack unit by junior Ian King, who ranks No. 16 in the country in assists per game at 2.00 and has 10 assists overall to lead the team and is second in points with 18. Additionally, senior Peter Kraus is tied for second on the team in goals (eight) and is third on the team in points with 10.
Junior attackman Ian King enters the contest with a point in 26 consecutive games, a streak that began on March 1, 2014, against Johns Hopkins. King has notched 54 goals and 21 helpers for 75 points over that span and has been held scoreless in a contest only once in his career (vs. Johns Hopkins on Feb. 22, 2014). He is one of only eight players in the NCAA to have such a streak of at least 25 consecutive games.
In the latest NCAA rankings, Kyle Jackson ranks No. 15 in the NCAA in shooting percentage, as he has scored a goal on 53 percent of his shots (19 goals on 36 shots). The Wolverines boast the No. 16 clearing percentage in the NCAA at 89 percent and are shooting at a 32-percent clip, which is good for No. 15 nationally.
U-M's man-down defense has killed off 83 percent of opponent chances, which comes in at No. 8 nationally, and has turned the ball over 11.60 times per game, which is sixth nationally. Senior longstick Chase Brown has been instrumental on both units and ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten in caused turnovers at 1.40, while senior/junior goalie Gerald Logan is No. 2 in the Big Ten in both save percentage (54 percent) and saves per game (11.60).
Michigan has an opportunity to move to two games over .500 for the second time in program history, as the 2015 squad started last season 3-1.
OPPONENT PREVIEW
No. 5 Brown enters the contest as one of the top teams in the NCAA with a 4-0 record and is the nation's top offense, averaging 17.75 goals per contest. The Bears have outscored teams by an average of 7.67 goals a game this season and also lead the country in face-off percentage at 70 percent as a team, with Will Gurral winning 73 percent of his chances at the dot.
The offense is led by All-America attackman Dylan Molloy, who is No. 9 in the NCAA in goals per game at 3.33, as is No. 2 in the country in points per game at 6.00. In addition to the offensive and face-off excellence, longsticks Alec Tulett is No. 5 in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.33), while Larken Kemp continues to be one of the best all-around longstick midfielders in the country, as he is averaging 1.67 assists per game, 1.33 caused turnovers per game and 4.67 ground balls a contest.
Jack Kelly is the man between the pipes for Brown, as he is No. 5 in the NCAA in save percentage (63 percent) and No. 11 in saves per game (12.67).
Brown leads the all-time series by a 1-0 margin following last season's 22-12 defeat of the Wolverines on March 8, 2015, in Ann Arbor.
