THINGS TO KNOW
In its lone midweek home game of the season, the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team (3-4) looks to improve to 3-1 at home as it hosts the Marist Red Foxes (2-4) Wednesday (March 23) at 7 p.m. from Michigan Stadium. Following the matchup, U-M will have a 10-day respite prior to opening up Big Ten play vs. Maryland (April 2).
WOLVERINE BITES
Kyle Jackson enters the week with 29 points, which ties his career high in a single season with five games remaining. His 23 goals are one off his career high, and nine away from teammate Ian King's program record that was set during the 2014 season. Jackson currently leads the Big Ten in goals per game (3.29) and ranks No. 4 nationally in the category and is No. 3 in the conference and No. 16 in the NCAA in points per game with 4.14. He has compiled at least three goals in all but one contest this season.
Conversely, junior attackman Ian King is only two assists away from breaking Will Meter's (2012) single-season record of 15, as he boasts 13 assists. The attack unit is also headlined by senior Peter Kraus, who is second on the team in goals with 12, and ranks No. 3 in the country and tops in the Big Ten in shooting percentage at 58 percent.
Senior face-off specialist Brad Lott won 19-of-29 chances (66 percent) at the dot in the defeat against Dartmouth, with the 19 wins ranking fourth most in program history. Lott ranks No. 25 nationally at 56 percent and is on pace to eclipse his best career number of 53 percent in 2014. The Wolverines are 3-2 this season in games that they have won the face-off battle.
Junior midfielder Mikie Schlosser and freshman Justin Gibbons had their second multi-goal games of the season, as they each accounted for a pair of goals versus the Big Green. Gibbons has four goals over the last three games, while Schlosser broke a four-game goalless streak with the effort.
Freshman longstick Nick DeCaprio has been a bright spot on defense the past two contests, collecting 11 ground balls while causing one turnover. He has also been a consistent threat in transition and stood out defensively, as he collected eight ground balls and caused a turnover, while defensive midfielder Chase Young had four ground ball pickups and a caused turnover.
Boasting a 3-4 overall mark, U-M has played five games this year that have been decided by three goals or less, and are 3-2 in such contests.
OPPONENT PREVIEW
Marist enters the matchup with a 2-4 overall record after most recently defeating Monmouth on March 19 by a score of 9-8. The Red Foxes have also notched a win on the season over Binghamton (10-8). Each of Marist's six games have been decided by three or fewer goals, which includes a four-overtime one-goal loss to No. 20 Air Force.
The squad ranks No. 56 in the NCAA in total offense (8.33 goals per game) and is No. 20 in total defense (9.0 goals per game). Attackman Joseph Radin ranks No. 3 in the NCAA in goals per game at 3.5 per contest while leading the No. 1 man-up offense in the country (0.7 goals per game). Marist is led defensively by goalie Brian Corrigan, who is recording an NCAA-leading 14.33 saves per game to go along with a 61-percent save percentage (3rd in the nation) and 8.67 goals-against average (16th in the nation).
An area which Michigan will look to exploit is at the face-off where Marist ranks 68th of 68 teams in face-off winning percentage (30 percent) on the season. Michigan will also try to get after ground balls, as Marist's 20 ground balls per game ranks 67th out of 68 teams. The Red Foxes 80-percent clearing percentage also ranks 56 of 68 teams.
U-M has never faced the Red Foxes.
