CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team opened up its 2016 season with a 20-10 setback Saturday (Feb. 6) at No. 6 North Carolina at Fetzer Field. Senior Kyle Jackson was one off of his caree high of four goals, while junior Ian King added two scores and three assists in the losing effort.
Michigan got on the board just 1:26 into the contest, as Jackson took a feed from junior Ian King from X. Jackson then ripped home a shot from 10 yards out to give the Wolverines the early 1-0 lead.
UNC then went on a 5-0 run over the next 3:13 to bring the count to 5-1, before markers from senior Mike Hernandez and King cut the UNC lead to 5-3. The Tar Heels closed the quarter with goals from Luke Goldstock and Chris Cloutier as the quarter ended with U-M in a 7-3 hole.
The second quarter saw the Wolverines play even with the Tar Heels at 3-3.
Early in the second, Jackson stifled the UNC defense, scoring back-to-back goals at 13:45 and 12:41 to run the tally to 7-5, before UNC's Peyton Klawinski (10:57) and Timmy Kelly (6:52) marked back-to-back scores to make it 9-5. The two sides traded goals to finish the half and headed into the intermission at a 10-6 scoreline.
The Tar Heels then burst out of the gates in third, holding the Wolverines scoreless and extended their lead to 13-6 with three unanswered scores in the third quarter alone and ran away with the rest of the game with three more scores in the fourth quarter. U-M freshman Decker Curran put an end to the drought at the 9:14 mark of the fourth, as he connected with junior Mikie Schlosser off a running feed from X for his first collegiate goal.
Following a score from senior Peter Kraus at the 5:05 mark of the fourth, Jackson then equaled his career high of five goals at the 2:35 mark of the fourth. Jackson earned his fifth point on the game as he fed senior Riley Kennedy on a lefty step down from the right wing. King finished off the U-M scoring with 31 seconds remaining for his first goal of the contest to bring the tally to its final scoreline.
