ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Iowa's pitching combination of Calvin Mathews and Nick Hibbing allowed just four hits and the Hawkeyes put up single runs in the third and fifth innings in a 2-0 shutout of the University of Michigan baseball team to close the three-game series Sunday afternoon (May 3) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Mathews went the first six frames, allowing three hits, striking out two and walking a pair in earning the win. Hibbing picked up his fifth save, pitching the final three innings and giving up one hit. Sophomore Brett Adcock pitched 5.1 innings in his start for the Maize and Blue, allowing seven hits and two runs with four strikeouts and four walks.
Iowa put up a run in the third as Nick Day led off with a single, went to second on a walk and scored on Tyler Peyton's single to center. The Hawkeyes plated a run in the fifth as Kris Goodman reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Eric Toole from third. Michigan used three double plays to escape further damage. Freshman Ryan Nutof also had two big strikeouts in the sixth with two runners on, keeping the game at 2-0.
Sophomore Carmen Benedetti, junior Cody Bruder and freshmen Jake Bivens and Drew Lugbauer had the four hits for U-M in defeat.
Michigan goes on its final road trip of the regular season starting this Tuesday (May 5) at UIC. First pitch is at 6 p.m. CDT, and the game will be televised on ESPN3.
