LINCOLN, Neb. -- Seniors Jackson Glines and Eric Jacobson each had three hits, but Nebraska took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth and added insurance with four runs in the seventh as the University of Michigan baseball team fell, 6-3, Sunday (March 22) at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. The result completes the series sweep for Nebraska.
The Huskers scored a run in the bottom of the first as Ryan Boldt scored on Ben Miller's RBI single. Sophomore Carmen Benedetti threw out Jake Schleppenbach at the plate trying to score on Miller's hit to end the inning. The Wolverines tied the game at one in the top of the second. Freshman Jake Bivens led off the frame with an opposite-field single. He moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on fifth-year senior Kendall Patrick's single to left.
Michigan led off the third with singles from Glines and junior Cody Bruder; however, Glines was picked off second base. Benedetti walked, but Nebraska got out of the inning without giving up a run as a fielder's choice and a groundout ended the threat.
Nebraska scored an unearned run to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Tanner Lubach doubled with one out. He scored on a dropped pop up off Austin Darby's bat. The Huskers extended its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Two Michigan errors combined with three walks and a hit-by-pitch led to the four-spot for the Huskers.
The Wolverines put up a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Senior Kevin White doubled with one out and scored on Jacobson's single. Jacobson moved up 90 feet on defensive indifference and scored on Glines' single. Nebraska went to Colton Howell, and he got a strike out to end the game.
On the mound, freshman Jayce Vancena took the loss. He allowed one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 4.2 innings.
