ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's soccer head coach Greg Ryan announced today (Monday, Nov. 24) that rising seniors Maddie Clarfield, Corinne Harris and Christina Ordonez were selected to represent the Wolverines as team captains for the 2015 season. All three were chosen by their teammates and coaches and will each serve as first-year captains.
"When we select captains, we want the very best leaders, and we have three fantastic leaders that took a huge leadership role this year in Tina, Corinne and Maddie," said Ryan. "We go into next season with outstanding leaders in our senior class and that's always a huge indicator of success. I'm very pleased to have these three lead this team."
With the 2014 season recently wrapping up less than three weeks ago, there is about eight-and-a-half months before the team will report for its 2015 training camp. That time will give the three new captains a head start at establishing themselves as leaders among their teammates and coaching staff. The Wolverines will now participate in lifting and conditioning sessions, as well as a spring competition season to prepare for the 2015 campaign.
"Our captains play such a positive role of us," Ryan added. "We meet with them, identifying themes for the year, potential concerns and discuss how to manage certain situations. We also try to turn as much of the daily management over to them as we can, as far as helping players feel good about what they're doing, making sure people are enjoying themselves, identifying things that we can add to make it a better experience. And they also come to us with things they need help with or ideas they have -- we just need to be in constant communication with them so we have a pulse of the team and know how to best help everybody."
All three captains possess different strengths that their coaches and teammates felt would make them effective leaders.
"Maddie is one of the best leaders I've ever met," said Ryan. "She's extremely bright, articulate, a great person and understands her teammates very well on and off the field. I almost feel like she's another assistant coach -- she always seems to have the right things to say to the group."
"Corinne and Tina are very similar. I think they're really growing in their on the field, verbal leadership. They've been consistent starters for this team and will continue that. They're also incredible leaders by example -- they're exceptionally fit, focused, determined and bring that message to our team on and off the field."
