U-M Loses in Straight Sets at No. 20 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Freshman Caroline Knop had 13 kills and eight digs, but for the second straight night, the University of Michigan volleyball team fell in straight sets, this time to No. 20 Ohio State Saturday night (Oct. 25) inside St. John Arena. Set scores are 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19.

Knop led all hitters with the 13 terminations and added two service aces, while junior Lindsey Lerg had 13 digs. Senior Lexi Dannemiller tallied 35 assists, while sophomore Abby Cole had a pair of blocks.
Michigan went up 3-2 in the first set after freshman Adeja Lambert's kill and took a 5-3 lead as Lambert and junior Krystalyn Goode combined for the block. Ohio State then went on a 7-2 run, capped by a Buckeye block. Lambert's termination cut the lead to 12-11 but Michigan called timeout after a Wolverine blocking error gave OSU a 17-13 advantage. The Maize and Blue scored the next two points after Goode's kill and a Buckeye error but Ohio State extended its lead to 20-15 after a Wolverine blocking error. Michigan fought off three Buckeye set points after kills from Knop and Cole and a Knop service ace, but a Buckeye block gave Ohio State the 25-21 first-set victory.
Lambert's solo block gave Michigan an early 4-2 lead in set two. Goode's kill tied the set at six before the Buckeyes scored the next three points, capped by a Wolverine net violation. Michigan tied the set at 11 after Cole's kill but an Elizabeth Campbell ace and Buckeye block made it 17-13 in OSU's favor. Lambert's service ace and a Buckeye hitting error cut that lead to 18-17 but Campbell's termination for Ohio State put the Buckeyes up 21-18. A Wolverine ball-handling error gave Ohio State a 23-19 lead. The Maize and Blue chipped away after Knop's kill and service ace cut the lead to two (23-21). Ohio State closed out the set on a Wolverine block error and a Buckeye block, giving OSU a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
Ohio State had a 5-3 advantage in the third set on Luisa Schirmer's kill. A Buckeye block made it 9-6 and an OSU service ace put Ohio State on top 12-9. Knop's kill cut the lead to 13-11 and a termination from freshman Katherine Mahlke made it 15-13 OSU. The Buckeyes extended the lead to 18-13 on an Erin Sekinger kill. Knop's termination cut the Ohio State lead to 19-15 and Cole and Dannemiller assisted on a block as the Buckeyes called timeout at 22-18. Sekinger's kill set up match point at 24-19 and a Wolverine attack error a point later ended the contest.
Michigan had four service aces in the match and had a 43-41 dig advantage on the Buckeyes. Ohio State had eight team blocks and hit .294 for the match.
Michigan returns to Cliff Keen Arena this Friday (Oct. 31) to open a four-match homestand with a 7 p.m. match against Northwestern. Michigan plays six of its next seven matches at home.

• Ohio State now has a 52-19 all-time series advantage on Michigan after the Buckeyes' 3-0 win this evening.
• Michigan is 7-4 in three-set matches this season.
• Michigan is now 2-5 overall against ranked opponents this season.
• Freshman Caroline Knop reached double digits in kills for the eighth time this season. Knop had 13 kills in the Ohio State match.
• Junior Lindsey Lerg had 13 digs on the night and now has 11 career double-digit dig performances.
• Michigan played seven of its first 10 Big Ten matches on the road and now has a four-match homestand beginning on Oct. 31.
