Michigan Makes It Four in a Row with Sweep of Terps

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team had a torrid .443 hitting percentage in making quick work of Maryland in a 3-0 win Saturday night (Oct. 18) inside the XFINITY Pavilion. Set scores were 25-11, 25-14 and 25-20.

Three Wolverines were in double figures in kills, led by freshman Caroline Knop's (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) 13 terminations. Sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) had 12 kills, while freshman Adeja Lambert (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) added 11 and made it a double-double with 10 digs. Senior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 35 assists, and freshman Claire Kieffer-Wright (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) had four blocks, two of them solos.
Everything went the Maize and Blue's way in the first set as Michigan hit .556 on the way to a 25-11 win. The Wolverines scored the set's first four points and had a 6-1 lead after a combined block from Cole and Kieffer-Wright. Cole's kill put U-M up 8-1 and a Knop termination made it 13-2. Lambert put away a swing at 17-6 and Knop had kills at both 19-7 and 23-8. Lambert ended the set with a termination as Michigan had just one attack error, a pair of service aces and held the Terps to a .000 hitting percentage in that first set.
Another hot hitting performance by the Maize and Blue gave Michigan a 2-0 lead going into the locker room. Junior Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) and Kieffer-Wright combined on a block for a 6-2 lead. It was 11-7 after a Dannemiller kill and a triple block with Goode, Lambert and Kieffer-Wright gave the Wolverines a 13-7 lead. Kieffer-Wright put Michgian up 15-9. Lambert's termination gave the Maize and Blue a 20-13 lead. That was followed by a Dannemiller solo block and a Knop service ace. Cole closed out the set with a kill at 25-14. Michigan hit .462 with 3.5 team blocks in set two.
Kieffer-Wright gave Michigan a 5-1 win in the third set with a solo block. Cole's termination put the Wolverines up 8-2 and a Lambert kill made it 12-5. Knop put the Maize and Blue up 17-8 with a kill and Cole gave Michigan a 19-9 lead with a successful swing. Goode set up match point with a kill and Cole ended it with a termination from the middle as the Wolverines head back to Ann Arbor with a four-match winning streak.
U-M had six service aces, 6.5 team blocks and outdug Maryland, 31-21. The Wolverines also sided out at 78 percent.
Michigan next travels to State College, Pa., to face Penn State this Friday night (Oct. 24) at 7 p.m. The match will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
NOTES
• Michigan picks up its first four-match winning streak of the season.
• Michigan has won all five meetings in the all-time series with Maryland.
• The Wolverines have now won 12 straight sets with sweeps of Iowa (Oct. 10), Nebraska (Oct. 12), Rutgers (Oct. 17) and Maryland.
• Michigan hit a season-high .443 in the win over Maryland. The previous high was .392 against Eastern Michigan on Sept. 20.
• Freshman Caroline Knop recorded her seventh double-digit kill performance of the season. She led Michigan with 13 kills on the night.
• Freshman Adeja Lambert had her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs. Lambert also had a double-double against Iowa on Oct. 10 (13 kills, 10 digs).
• The Wolverines had four solo blocks on the night, two of them coming from freshman Claire Kieffer-Wright.
