U-M Runs Past Thundering Herd in Block Out Bullying Match

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team defeated Marshall, 3-0, on Friday (Sept. 20) in the Wolverines' second annual "Block Out Bullying" match. Set scores were 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 inside Crisler Center.

Senior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) led U-M's attack with 10 kills while adding four blocks. Junior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 27 assists and nine digs, while senior Ally Sabol (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) and sophomore Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Michigan had 22 digs and used five service errors by the Thundering Herd to take the first set 25-20. The Maize and Blue jumped out to a 7-1 lead off Sabol's serve and a Dannemiller kill. Marshall cut the lead to 8-6, but a Marshall attack error put the Wolverines on top 11-7. The Maize and Blue pushed the advantage to 16-12 helped by a Cross solo block. A kill from senior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) made it 18-15 U-M, and a Cross termination put the Wolverines on top 20-16. Freshman Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) collected set point on a kill, giving the Maize and Blue the first-set victory.
Michigan forced Marshall into a -.200 hitting percentage in set two, taking the 25-13 win. A Dannemiller kill gave U-M the early 8-3 lead. Michigan went up 12-7 and 15-8 on a pair of Cole kills. Sophomore Ally Davis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) put U-M up 18-10 on a termination, and a Cross kill made it 20-13. Cross then served out the set as five straight Marshall errors put the Wolverines up 2-0.
Marshall hit negative for the second straight set, and the Wolverines put down 12 kills to take the straight-set victory. Marshall had a lead as late as 11-10 before kills by Cross and Davis gave the Maize and Blue the lead. Michigan went up 16-12 on a Thundering Herd error and built an 18-15 lead on Davis' termination. Back-to-back service aces from Dannemiller made it 20-15, and back-to-back kills from sophomore Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga./Walton) gave Michigan the 3-0 win.
The Wolverines had six service aces, while Marshall committed seven service errors. The Maize and Blue hit .147 for the match, compared to -.040 for Marshall. The Wolverines also had seven team blocks on the morning.
The Wolverines continue play in the Michigan Invitational tonight (Friday, Sept. 20) back in Cliff Keen Arena against Maryland. That match starts at 7:30 p.m.
NOTES
• The match was Michigan's second annual "Block Out Bullying" match. The event brought more than 1,300 students from Ann Arbor and surrounding school districts to campus to participate in fun and educational activities with U-M student-athletes.
• The match was held at Crisler Center. It was the first time the Wolverines have played in Crisler Center since a 3-1 loss to Ohio State on Nov. 25, 2011. U-M last won at Crisler on Dec. 1, 2007, vs. Colorado State (3-0).
• Michigan held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage for the second time this season. The Wolverines also held Clemson to a -.033 hitting percentage on Aug. 30.
• Senior Ally Sabol led the Wolverines in digs for the first time this season and the 11th in her career.
• Senior Jennifer Cross recorded double-digit kills for the fifth time this year and the 43rd time in her career in the Marshall win.
