Michigan Digs Out Three-Set Win at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) and sophomore Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West)Â had double-doubles and the University of Michigan volleyball team posted 76 digs in a 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 win at Iowa on Friday night (Sept. 28) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Erwin had a match-high 13 kills and added 13 digs, while Dannemiller had 33 assists and a season-high 16 digs. Dannemiller was one of four Wolverines with double-figure digs. Freshman Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had 25 digs in the three-set match, while junior Ally Sabol (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) joined Erwin with 13 digs. Freshman Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga./Walton) had 11 kills and sophomore Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) had five assisted blocks.
The Wolverines hit .306 and used Erwin's six kills and Morales' nine digs to take the first set 25-14. A Dannemiller kill gave the Wolverines a 5-2 advantage and a Hawkeye error put U-M up 8-5, forcing a Hawkeye timeout. The Hawkeyes came back to make it 10-8 with a kill off a long rally, but Michigan came out of that timeout on a 6-0 run, capped by an assisted block from Cross and Erwin. A block from junior Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and fifth-year senior Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf Prep) put Michigan up 20-12 and the Wolverines took the set, with kills from Murphy and Erwin and an Iowa ball-handling error.
The second set featured five ties in the first half of the game. Michigan went up 11-8 on an assisted block from Erwin and Cross and took a 16-13 lead on back-to-back kills from Murphy and Erwin. An Iowa attack error forced the Hawkeyes to take time at 18-14. Blocks from Cross and Dannemiller and an Iowa error put Michigan up 22-15 and the Wolverines earned a two-set advantage with as an Iowa service error gave Michigan the 25-21 win. Michigan held the Hawkeyes to a .000 hitting percentage in that second set.
A Toon kill gave Michigan a 7-3 advantage in the beginning of the third set. An Iowa error made it 10-5 Wolverines, forcing the Hawkeyes to call timeout. That was part of a 5-0 run capped by a Dannemiller kill at 13-5. A Hawkeye attack error gave Michigan an 18-10 lead, but Iowa came back to cut the lead to 20-18 on a block. Michigan then scored the next three points after that and took the set and the match on a Murphy kill.
U-M forced Iowa into a .051 hitting percentage and had eight blocks on the night.
Michigan will have Saturday off before playing at No. 6 Nebraska this Sunday (Sept. 30) at 2 p.m. CDT in Lincoln, Neb.
NOTES
• Lexi Dannemiller recorded her fourth double-double of the season and 19th in her career as she had 33 assists and 16 digs. The dig mark is a season high, breaking the 14 digs she had against Virginia Tech on Aug. 25.
• Tiffany Morales had 25 digs in tonight's win. That mark is two off her career high of 27, set in a five-set win over Arkansas on Sept. 1.
• Lexi Erwin recorded her ninth double-double of the season and 18th of her career with 13 kills and 13 digs.
• Michigan had four players with double-digit digs. The last time the Wolverines had four players in double digits in digs was on Sept. 15, 2012, against Duke. Tiffany Morales had 15, Kelly Murphy had 14 and Molly Toon and Lexi Dannemiller had 10 digs apiece in the win over the Blue Devils.
• Michigan's 76 digs are a season high for a three-set match and three off a season high, which was set against Arkansas on Sept. 1.
• Michigan leads the overall series with Iowa, 34-26, and has won three straight matches vs. the Hawkeyes.
• Michigan moves to 8-0 on the season in three-set matches.
