ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its final tuneup before the 2005 regular season, the University of Michigan women's soccer team scored a 4-1 exhibition victory over Detroit Friday afternoon (Aug. 19) at U-M Soccer Field. The game, which featured four periods (two 35-minute and two 17-minute), was dominated by the Wolverines, as U-M outshot the Titans 21-3 and reeled off four unanswered goals.
After surrendering a goal in the seventh minute to go down 1-0, Michigan responded with a score by senior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) at 14:12. Senior Stephanie Boyles' (Arvada, Colo./Pomona HS) corner kick fell right in front of the net, where sophomore Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) and junior Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) fired shots that were blocked by Titan defenders. Heaton, however, was able to slip her attempt through traffic and into the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Heaton found the back of the cage again less than 10 minutes later, as she received a short pass from sophomore Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and flicked the ball past Detroit goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry to put the Wolverines ahead 2-0. U-M struck once more before the period ended, with freshman Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) taking the ball up the right side before sending a cross to Dobbyn at the far post for a goal at 28:59.
Michigan dominated possession for the remainder of the contest. Sophomore Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) capped off the scoring at 45:06 with a blast from the top of the box to make the score 4-1.
Junior Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS), freshman Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker HS) and sophomore Lindsay Yakel (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica HS) split time between the posts for the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines begin their 12th season of varsity competition next Friday (Aug. 26) in Lawrence, Kan., against No. 23 Kansas. The game is slated for a 5 p.m. CDT start at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
