NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Soccer Buzz announced today (Wednesday, Sept. 22) that University of Michigan freshman forward Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) has been named to its National Elite Team of the Week. Soccer Buzz, an Internet-based magazine devoted to women's collegiate soccer, honored Dobbyn following her two-goal performance in U-M's home victories over Northwestern and Illinois last weekend.
After scoring the opening goal in a 3-2 win over the Wildcats last Friday (Sept. 17), Dobbyn sent the then No. 11-ranked Fighting Illini home with their first loss of the season with her game-winning header in the 13th minute of play in U-M's 1-0 victory Sunday (Sept. 19). She has found the back of the net six times in Michigan's first eight games and ranks second on the team in points with 14 (six goals, two assists).
Prior to the 2004 season, the publication considered Dobbyn one of the top 50 incoming high school recruits in the nation.
Dobbyn and the Wolverines (5-2-1, 2-0 Big Ten) look to extend their three-game winning streak and remain undefeated in the Big Ten Conference when they face Minnesota and Iowa on the road this weekend. Michigan will face the Golden Gophers on Friday (Sept. 24, 7 p.m. CDT) at Elizabeth Lyle Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn., before traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday (Sept. 26, 1 p.m CDT) to take on the Hawkeyes at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
