WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan field hockey kicked off the 2004 season with a narrow 3-2 loss against North Carolina on Saturday (Aug. 28) at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Wake Forest's Kentner Stadium. With just 34 seconds remaining in regulation, the Tar Heels' Karen Mann tallied her second goal of the game to break a 2-2 tie and lead North Carolina to victory.
After an even first half that produced a 1-1 tied score, North Carolina outshot the Wolverines 18-1 in the second frame to take control of the game and put U-M on the defensive.
Junior/sophomore Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) tipped in a shot from senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) at the 8:34 mark to notch her first collegiate goal and give the Wolverines the first lead of the game. North Carolina tied the score at 24:17 as Mann put the Tar Heels on the board on a penalty corner with assists from Laura Douglas and Anne Marie Janus.
Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) put Michigan back into the lead early in the second half, scoring an unassisted goal at the 40:17 mark. Hortillosa moved around three North Carolina defenders entering the striking circle before flicking the ball over the Tar Heels' sprawling goalkeeper, Katy Tran. Michigan's advantage was short-lived, however, as the Tar Heels again knotted up the score just under four minutes later as Kelsey Keeran collected an unassisted goal at 44:11.
Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) registered eight saves in the losing effort, including seven in the second half. Tran made two stops on U-M's four shots on goal.
The Wolverines will conclude play in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Sunday (Aug. 29) when they square off against two-time defending NCAA champion Wake Forest at 2:30 p.m. Iowa will face North Carolina at noon in the day's first match.
